Easter Special: Planet of the Dead
Urgh, I don't know if it's just me but it's hard not to wish there was at least a Martha mention with UNIT's presence in the episode. I'm assuming she's still based in New York or she's off helping Jack at Torchwood Cardiff. Oh well, you can't get everything...
BUT, I did like the tiny mention from the Doctor about going to the end of the universe. Though I'm sure that was to remind people about the Master more than anything else. Regardless, any series 3 mention is good in my book. And the reference to Donna calling him "Spaceman", but now that I think about it - she called Handy "Spaceman"...I can't remember when she called the Doctor that. Must have missed it. I do love that they're keeping in mentions to previous companions (like in "Partners In Crime" for Martha :-)).
Aside from all the mentions - I should get to the point of this post, the actual episode. :P
Overall, I enjoyed it. The Doctor was his usual self and I like seeing him happy and figuring things out whilst going off on scientific rambles... I found it funny when Lady Christina appointed herself as leader when the Doctor assumed that he'd be chosen as the leader. And then she goes ahead and asks him to explain what's really going on. That whole scene amused me...despite me not liking Christina too much.
I tolerated Christina, but just that she was set up at the beginning as a thief didn't endear her to me no matter what she did later on. Also, I'm guessing the Doctor knew about her thieving since he placed so much importance on getting the crystal (something Christina would be up to stealing anyway).
And then in the end, OF COURSE it wasn't the crystal that was needed, it was the clamps for the wheels. Loved how he just tossed the crystal aside...I'm sure Christina was like, "And I went through all that trouble and the crystal didn't matter anyway?!"
Oh, and Malcolm, the UNIT Scientific Advisor - I liked him. :-) I thought it was sweet how excited he was to be talking to the Doctor and working with him to get through the situation. I'm not surprised he'd act like that...the Doctor was his predecessor and that's some big shoes to fill.
I think Malcolm was my favorite character out of the whole special despite some moments that I thought were a little overdone. The writers should have known when to, you know, cap all the "fangirling." At some point, it got to be a little too much. But still, Malcolm was all right. Especially when the Doctor called him a genius and how much that obviously meant to Malcolm coming from the Doctor.
Question: I really could use a transcript of this episode, but did the Doctor really say "I don't care" at the end (after they get off of the bus in London) as he flashes his psychic paper at a UNIT official?
I believe the UNIT people were asking for identification and the Doctor just breezily passes by and says something flippantly. Only thing I got out of it was "I don't care." I found that really funny...I'll be disappointed if I got the words wrong. :P Because that made me LOL. Guess he didn't feel like coming up with a good name/title...
And Christina has her own flying bus now, apparently...
I rather prefer the "monster" storyline in this episode over the Christmas Special (the overused Cybermen). It was something different and kept my interest...
I did like that despite a similar set up to Midnight - at least the passengers cooperated with each other and didn't gang up on the Doctor.
And the ominous words -- particularly "he will knock four times." People have been saying that's a reference to the Master or the invisible creature in Midnight... my first guess was Death or the Reaper (must be the "Supernatural" fan in me, lol).
Either way, that line intrigued me and I'm interested to see how it plays out...and if it'll play a part when it comes time for him to regenerate.
Next episode: The Waters of Mars
"Water always wins" Looks like they're on a spaceship?
I miss having a regular companion...:-(
