~ * ~
It was a dark, rather unremarkable night. Martha involuntarily shivered as she looked around to discern where the TARDIS had brought them.
She turned to the Doctor. “Are you sure we’re in the right place? This just looks like a deserted road out in the middle of nowhere.”
She waved her hand at the long, empty road ahead of them. The TARDIS had been parked by the side of the road.
The Doctor appeared deep in thought, but then he said, “Well, the distress signal originated in the states. I might just be slightly imprecise with the location…”
“Wouldn’t be the first time,” Martha remarked, a side grin at him.
“Oi, cheeky Martha Jones!”
Before Martha could reply, they heard a moan – it sounded like a person in obvious pain.
“Doctor, do you have a flashlight?”
He nodded and stuck his hands in his overcoat pockets to retrieve a flashlight. He pulled it out and handed the flashlight over to Martha.
“Thank you. I’m going to check out what’s going on.”
The Doctor moved forward quickly. “I don’t want you going alone.”
Martha tilted her head at him and gave him an incredulous look. “It’s only a few feet. I’ve been through a lot worse, you know that – while traveling with you, with UNIT, Torchwood--”
“Now, Torchwood is Jack’s fault.”
Martha shook her head, smiling at him. “I have a valid point, Doctor. I have my mobile on me – so just in case.”
He nodded and pulled out the mobile she had left him the first time around (after brilliantly defeating the Master – oh, what seemed like so long ago now).
“Got it. Speed dial. And Martha?”
“Yes, Doctor?”
He nodded at her. “Be careful.”
“Right, of course,” she answered him.
Martha used the light from the flashlight to direct her. She found a man lying rather still on the side of the road. The man was wearing a trench coat over his white shirt and trousers.
She cautiously neared the prone figure and kneeled down beside him.
“Are you all right? My name is Martha. I’m a doctor – I can help you.”
The man just continued to moan, appearing not to have heard her.
But then Martha heard him utter something.
“Castiel. Castiel, please. Castiel…”
Martha moved to touch him, but then the man sat up abruptly and looked at her.
“I do not have time. I’m sorry.”
“What d’you--”
But before Martha could finish what she was going to say, the man reached out his arm toward her and placed it on her forehead.
“It’s in your blood. You’ve been chosen.”
A flurry of whispers telling her things she could just understand invaded her consciousness. Martha knew what she was in for but it was a whirlwind taking over her—
--the second after she said, “Yes.”
“You gave her no choice,” Jimmy said – now feeling more exhausted and worn out without the angel using him as a vessel.
Castiel stood up, flexing his hands to get used to this new smaller feminine frame.
“I had to act quickly. It will be temporary. You need medical assistance.”
“She came with someone. Take care of that first.”
Jimmy pointed at the figure coming toward them.
“Dean is calling for me. I don’t have time for this.”
“It’s too late now,” Jimmy said softly.
Castiel – now in Martha’s body – looked ahead of him to see a man with a steely expression on his face now nearing him.
“Castiel – why didn’t you heal me?”
The angel looked apologetically at Jimmy. “I couldn’t. It was out of my control. Rest at peace now. You’ll be fine. I will return to you.”
He laid two fingers on his previous vessel’s forehead and Jimmy quietly fell asleep, a small sigh of relief coming out of him as his eyes closed.
“Martha? What happened?”
The Doctor was startled at the blank expression he was getting from Martha.
“Martha Jones is gone for now,” Castiel explained.
He gave him her mobile and the flashlight.
“Don’t look for me. I will find out and there will be consequences.”
“Who are you?”
“Castiel.”
“You’re not human.”
Castiel gave him a hard gaze. She bowed her head and a big pair of wings silhouetted by shadow appeared at her back.
“You’re not -- ?” the Doctor began in shock.
“Yes, is that sufficient for you?”
“What do you mean – she’ll be “gone for now”? How do I know I have your word on that?”
Castiel didn’t say a word.
“Aren’t you going to say something?”
“You just have to trust me.”
“Trust you?! I barely know you.”
The Doctor stared at the angel before him. He found it hard to reconcile the fact that the person before him looked like Martha, but all that he associated with her was gone…lost.
“Why are you here? Why have you taken her? Tell me!”
The angel gave him a warning look as the Doctor closed the distance between them.
“I do not have to tell you.”
“I can force you out of her. Don’t think I won’t try.”
Castiel tilted her head, looking at him curiously. “You can’t – if I am forced out unwillingly, her life will be threatened. I’m sure you wouldn’t want to risk her life, don’t you?”
“Was that a threat?”
“No, I’m just stating the facts for you. Now I really must go, Time Lord.”
“It’s the Doctor. I’m the Doctor.”
The angel nodded. “Have patience, Doctor. I will return Martha back to you, but I can not do so now.”
Without waiting for the Doctor to reply, she turned around and walked back toward the still figure lying in the road.
“I’m not going to let this go,” he said in a loud voice, so he knew Castiel would get the message.
The angel made no move to answer him, or even to turn around to look at him.
The Doctor watched her kneel down beside the man and bow her head. She seemed to come to a decision and walked back to him.
“You will regret it if you come after me through my charge.”
“I don’t even know who you’re talking about.”
“I know about your kind. I won’t be fooled. Your cleverness precedes you, Doctor. And I assume you’ll try to track me --”
The Doctor didn't confirm or deny her statement. “I don’t kill or hurt others without good reason.”
“It is written that you are not above using companions as soldiers. Like this human vessel – your companion, Martha Jones. I am not here to judge and I’m sure you realize your mistakes, Doctor. Rest assured that I’ll have her back in one piece.”
The angel turned away from him for the final time and walked back to the unconscious man. Upon touching the human’s forehead, the two of them vanished, a faint flutter of wings heard by the Doctor in the angel’s wake.
No matter what Castiel had told him, the Doctor wasn’t convinced that the angel would keep the promise to return Martha back to him. He felt that he was being almost punished for treating Martha as he had – though some of the circumstances she was put through were out of his control.
The last thing he’d wanted was to place her in a situation where she was alone and walking the Earth to defeat the Master. And now – an angel had taken her over.
Maybe…no…
The Doctor shook his head. Martha wouldn’t consent to that, he was certain of it.
He headed back to the TARDIS. The angel was right about one thing – he wasn’t going to let Martha out of his sight. She was his good friend after all. And friends had to look out for each other --

The boy jumped, startled, from his place on the bed.
He held the gun in front of him directed at the sudden arrival. His hands were shaking, though he tried to hide it.
“Sam, what happened? Where’s Dean?”
“Who – who are you?”
“Castiel. I had to take on a new vessel.”
The boy didn't back down though. "Show me your wings. You could still be a demon--"
She sighed, trying not to think of the irony of Sam, the one with demon blood running through his veins, accusing her of being a demon.
The wings appeared at her back for a moment, so Sam could see, then they disappeared.
“Thanks,” Sam said. He fell back on to the bed, his head barely reaching the bed’s halfway point. He still held on to the gun though.
“Where’s Dean, Sam? And what happened to you?” She asked him again.
Sam looked up to the ceiling, actively avoiding Castiel’s gaze. It was weird enough to be five years old again; he didn’t know how to take the angel’s change of appearance. Dean would get a kick out of it, he was sure.
“I’m gonna kill him,” he muttered under his breath.
“Sam?”
“Uh yeah – Dean left. Thought it would be funny to leave me on my own. You know, whatever. Didn’t even consider if I’ll really be five again and forget things. Jerk.”
“I’m sure he had a good reason to--”
Sam sniffed. “Yeah, I’m sure he did. Trying to find a way to fix it.”
He rolled his eyes.
“Do you know what caused it, Sam?”
Sam sat up, an annoyed look in his eyes. “Dumbass said I should stop being such “a freakin’ giant” and then THIS --” he looked down at himself. “-- happened. I became small again. We did some research though – that is, I did. Dean was too busy laughing his ass off. Anyway, I found that this sort of word magic is temporary. The problem is...”
“You don’t know how long that will be.”
Sam nodded. “Is something wrong with you? You were looking for Dean, but you completely missed him. Your destination locator, whatever you call it, must be off or something--”
“That isn’t any of your concern.”
“Hmmm…well, can you stay here for a bit? Before you go off to deliver some message to Dean?”
“I don’t think I can --”
Castiel finally noticed Sam’s tired eyes and the small yawn he let out.
“Please? I need to get some sleep and I’d feel saf--” he trailed off.
“God, this is so embarrassing,” Sam thought, cursing Dean silently.
Castiel nodded, understanding. She sat beside him. “I’ll stay.”
Sam gave a little sigh of relief and leaned into her side.
He closed his eyes soon after. The angel removed the gun from his now loose grasp and then she carried Dean’s younger brother in her arms. She placed him into bed, tucked him under the covers.
Dean would have to wait, for now.
~ * ~
“What the fuck?” Dean uttered, quickly braking to stop the car.
He had been driving in the Impala -- a one-lane, deserted road ahead of him.
A woman, out of nowhere, appeared right in front of him. She looked winded and had to back up, as if she’d been running too fast and now that she had to stop, she had overcalculated her running speed.
And then Dean swore. He didn’t need this right now, dammit. Sammy was lookin’ like a little kid, for crissakes. So much for backup or going on any hunts any time soon.
Because as soon as the blonde woman had regained her footing, a plume of dark smoke flew in her direction.
And went into her.
Then she looked straight fuckin’ at him.
It was evening, but Dean could still see the black in her eyes.
“Fuck, just great. The last thing I need is a fuckin’ demon on me.”
He called for Castiel – hoping that he’d get his message.
He’d fuckin’ better.
“Dean Winchester, you’re prettier when you’re not in the pit,” the demon said with a leer.
She was now sitting comfortably in the passenger’s seat, leaning toward him.
“And you’re just a bitch,” he retorted, not looking at her.
Keep ‘em distracted –
“What do you want?” Dean said after the demon didn’t say anything. Just kept breathing at him and touching him.
“You’re no fun,” she pouted.
The hunter gave her a vicious look and wrapped his hand around her neck.
“Tell me what the hell the deal is! You all know about Sam’s situation, don’t you? If any of you tries to take advantage of that, you’ll have to go through me. Got that?”
“Oh, that’s not who we want, Dean.”
“Who is it then?”
He could feel her breath on his skin.
“You,” she whispered into his ear.
And then she laughed.

One of my favorite lines;
He felt that he was being almost punished for treating Martha as he had – though some of the circumstances she was put through were out of his control.
Ten needs these moments to help him realize that there are bigger things out there. Oh, and that yes, he needs to realize that he was indeed a jerk to her.

Yes, I agree. Of course it has to be the moment that he thinks he may never see her again - that the Doctor realizes what a jerk he was to her at times.
Thank you for reading and commenting. :) I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Five year old Sammy, Cas is having "Dean Radar" problems, Dean is having Demon issues and The Doctor is hot on Cas/Martha's trail.
I'm enjoying it so far. Keep up the good work!
