Oh, wow. I'm feeling kind of nervous now. I'm really glad you're enjoying this so far. :)

It definitely isn't easy choosing a daemon because (especially when it comes to a well-known character) everyone has their own opinions and preferences. I knew that what I chose might not agree with people, but believe me, I struggled deciding on a daemon for some characters.

Well. I can kind of see wolf for Arthur. I tend to see him as a domestic dog-soul, so wolf isn't far off. But why a white wolf? Is there any significance to that?

Arthur's daemon was one I wrestled with deciding on. I discussed this with a friend of mine and I was against making his daemon a wolf. I thought it would be too...predictable, maybe. But then my friend suggested a lion and I thought that would be even worse (even though it can work I suppose).

I can see Arthur having a domestic dog daemon, but for the purposes of this story - the fact that they're in exile and under threat - a wolf just fit better in that atmosphere. As to the significance of the white wolf, the answer to that will come as the story progresses...

The series seems to make a point of the extent to which he seems unremarkable until you get to know him, which a phoenix-soul just wouldn't do.

I see your point on this. I can definitely see Merlin having numerous unremarkable daemons as he grows up... that it's a bit of a surprise that it settles as a phoenix in the end. The core reason why I chose the phoenix for him is because of the bird's ability to be reborn (going off of its abilities in HP).

Dog does fit, but she has a lot of rabbit-traits.

Oh, I can understand the rabbit choice. Gwen was another hard choice, but then I decided on a Scottish terrier. For some reason, I just love the idea of Gwen having a dog that looks like Toto from Wizard of Oz. The image got stuck in my head...so I suppose Gwen is Dorothy in this. I'm a dog person, so I wanted at least one person to have a dog daemon.

However, we at aforementioned forum have come to the conclusion that daemons settle waaay too young in HDM.

I agree - I mean, how can one really know what kind of person they are when
they hit puberty? Most aren't even sure in their twenties!

I do sometimes think that Merlin (and also maybe Arthur) isn't settled yet. He clearly as a lot of personal growth left in him. Thus I have no problem at all with his daemon still changing. : )

Oh, my friend already caught me out on Merlin's daemon still changing. There's a reason for it that will be revealed in the fic... I agree about Arthur - he definitely has some growing left to do.

It remains an awesome idea, though. : D

Thank you! I really appreciate it. :)
