S4.6: The Doctor's Daughter

Jenny was alright - she didn't grate much, and I like the way she was "born." It allowed for some interesting interaction between her and the Doctor. I could understand why the Doctor was distant with her at first because of her being a machine - and even when he found out that she had two hearts he still took some time to adjust to her. I think it would have been more effective if this episode was the first of a two-parter - to allow more time for a gradual, believable progression to happen between the two of them.

As such, while the death scene of Jenny did have some impact (largely because David Tennant did a great job acting during that scene), I wish I could have had more time to get to know her better. She bugged me a bit...she was cute and I could tell she was learning to be a better person, but more character development is always nice. I loved her line: "love the running"...and how she mentioned it at the end when she was going off by herself. She does seem to have a fun personality...like the Doctor a bit but without the darkness that he's had to face. I would love to see her again.

I did feel sorry for Martha for getting kidnapped and having to deal with her "companion" dying. Not fair that her time was miserable - it's such a poor excuse to give her a bad time just so she wouldn't want to travel with the Doctor ever again. That's harsh - and I think that if she had had a good time, but *still* had gone home anyway - that would have shown that she had grown. And anyway, she survived worse things when she was traveling full-time with the Doctor - so this one trip pretty much paled in comparison.

I did appreciate though the glaringly obvious comparison between Martha and the Doctor - Martha was taking on the role of the Doctor in the episode...picking up a companion...enticing them with the wonders of freedom and adventure...and unfortunately, losing them after the companion saved her life. I was impressed by Freema's crying scene because I couldn't help but be sympathetic since it was so heartwrenching and well-acted.

What made me the most nervous was Donna's line about traveling with the Doctor forever. Oh no. I was not expecting her to say that. I thought she was better than that - that she understood that she couldn't travel with him forever. I have a really bad feeling that something doomsday-ish is going to happen and Donna is not going to fare well. If only she knew what Rose had promised - and how that hadn't turned out so well. *shakes head*

The goodbye scene between the Doctor and Martha was sweet, though I was hoping for a bit more. There was something about how Ten said "Doctor Martha Jones" that caught my attention - maybe it was just me looking too hard for something that wasn't there. But either way, I loved the emphasis on the 'Doctor' part...like he was proud of her and happy to see that she had accomplished so much. I guess when you don't have a lot of words to go on, you try to "read between the lines." All in all, I was okay with it since fic authors have been doing so well filling in the blanks. :-)
