(Sequel to An Unexpected Turn of Events)

Arthur did manage to navigate his way in the air on the winged steed, the horse that originally belonged to the princess, though the blond was certain that Prince Merlin had given him some magical assistance to quicken his ease with flying such a magical creature. Because, surely, this winged steed, a Pegasus according to the knights, was a magical entity. No normal horse would have wings.
And so he flew on his borrowed Pegasus, feeling amazed at how comfortable he was at flying the winged horse. Arthur rapidly grew to love being in the air, the breeze going past him as the horse flew with the wind.
Arthur flew beside Sir Arthur and Sir Lancelot while Prince Merlin with Princess Morgana sharing his horse led the group.
They flew higher and higher until they soon were above the clouds. The two Knights of Avalon regaled Arthur of tales of some of their missions; one story involved them battling a rather feisty pack of gryphons.
After an hour or so, the prince halted his Pegasus and held up his hand. “We’re here,” He declared loudly, his voice fighting against the wind.
Arthur couldn’t see anything different before them…there was nothing but sky ahead of them. No out of place doorway or archway or whatever you would expect as an entrance to another world. He could only surmise that maybe it was something only those who possessed magic could see and understand. He felt considerably annoyed that his lack of magic blinded him to some things. Like his love for Merlin had blinded him enough to keep his hapless manservant in his employ when by all rights he should have dismissed him.
“I’ll take care of Arthur,” Sir Arthur said.
Prince Merlin turned his head toward the knight and gave an acknowledging nod. The princess readjusted her grip around the prince’s waist, and Arthur almost missed the touch of annoyance on his double’s face upon that action. Clearly, he was not getting the full story on whatever was going on.
Of course, like any court – there would be intrigue and gossip. With a little digging – which his Morgana was an expert at – he’d discover the messy details of court life at Avalon. Now if he truly wanted to bother finding this out was another matter entirely. Presently, he was debating the fastest way to get Merlin to leave Avalon and return to Camelot with him.
“What is going to happen?” Arthur inquired, trying to quench his anxiety about what they were going to do.
“Since this is your first time, you may feel a little dizzy, but it should pass,” Lancelot assured him.
The blond knight nodded. “Just relax,” He advised.
Arthur did not like being kept in the dark at all, but there was little he could do about it. Sir Arthur, whose physical resemblance to him still startled him, steered his Pegasus closer to Arthur. He gripped Arthur’s arm in a strong grip, and the last thing he saw was the knight’s eyes flash gold before he felt his winged steed land on hard ground.

“Hello, Your Highness, Princess Morgana, Sir Arthur, Sir Lancelot,” Guinevere greeted them warmly, a nearly giddy look on her face as she set her eyes on Lancelot.
She smiled at Arthur as he climbed off his winged steed. “And you must be the visitor, Prince Arthur of Camelot?”
“Yes,” Arthur confirmed.
Upon looking at the woman, Arthur found that he hadn’t seen the end to the look-a-likes. He had hoped the two knights, the prince and princess would have been the end of it, but it was not. Although the woman before him was wearing a pale purple silk dress, certainly something that his world’s Gwen could not afford to purchase.
This alternate world was proving to be a weirdly shaped mirror of the world he knew. Arthur wondered if there was even a Camelot in this world – or was the kingdom of Avalon the equivalent of Camelot in this world?
“I am Guinevere, the head Keeper of the Gate,” she introduced herself.
“I suppose that I shouldn’t be surprised by your name,” Arthur remarked.
She shrugged, smiling softly at his comment. “With how many worlds there are, it’s inevitable that the similarities are as expected as the differences are bewildering,” Guinevere said thoughtfully.
“Prince Arthur would like to see his friend. He could not wait for his return to Camelot,” Prince Merlin told her as he climbed off his Pegasus, and then assisted Morgana off as well.
Guinevere nodded. “Yes, of course. I understand,” she said.
Arthur watched as Sir Lancelot climbed off his horse and said hello to her, producing a small bunch of colorful flowers magically to give her. Taking the flowers, she uttered a small, pleased “oh” and then smiled at him in thank you.
The prince wondered if he should take note of the pattern – yes, he did feel a deeper affection for Merlin than for Gwen when he allowed himself to consider his feelings on that matter. But if he loved Gwen enough to make her his Queen, then should he not be wary? After how Guinevere in two worlds now felt drawn to Lancelot, Prince Arthur could already see that it was a disaster waiting to happen.
Could he really trust in his Guinevere’s good character to overlook the Lancelot problem? However much he wished he could just have Merlin as his partner, his consort, Arthur knew he needed someone to bear an heir to the throne. He had thought Guinevere would be the one as she always held such faith in him, and tried to engender a caring and fairness in him in dealing with others; akin to what Merlin did as well. Yet, yet…Lancelot.
He shook his head, rubbing his brow in an effort to stop these worries about a future that seemed so distant at this moment in time. He could not allow the uncertainty and fear consume his mind – it would achieve nothing in the end. Caution was the best course of action for now. And what would come, would come… at the very least, Arthur felt assured that Merlin would be by his side. The thought calmed him.
“Well,” Sir Arthur said, raising his voice. “I think you’ve done your duty, Lancelot. I, for one, am ready to get out of here.”
The blond knight was the only one still on his winged steed, the horse looking just as restless as his double. The Pegasus’ wings were flapping, eager to take flight once again.
“Oh, but I would like to go with you, Sir Lancelot. The Lady Vivian is covering for Freya, and I could use a break,” she enthused.
And then suddenly, the Lady Vivian appeared looking exactly like the Vivian Arthur had the misfortune of meeting not that long ago. “Someone called?” She said airily.
“Yes, I need you to take care of things for a little while,” Guinevere informed her.
“Hmmm, all right,” Vivian said, nodding.
Her eyes flashed gold and then, to Arthur’s surprise, a living copy of Vivian was conjured right before his eyes. Vivian’s copy had brunette locks though where the original Vivian had fair hair.
The two Vivians both sat on the table and they began braiding each other’s hair and complimenting one another. Really, how much vainer could one get? Frankly, Arthur was not too surprised that even in this world; the Lady Vivian was a self-absorbed woman of status.
Seeing Arthur’s disbelieving look, Guinevere was quick to reassure him. “She may not be the brightest woman in existence, but trust me; the Lady Vivian has done an admirable job working here. Despite all appearances…” She bit her lip then when the blonde Vivian started giggling at something the other Vivian had said.
Sir Lancelot mounted his steed and helped Guinevere on to it until she was settled comfortably in the seat behind him.
“I have something to attend to,” the Princess Morgana declared. “Goodbye, love,” she said to Prince Merlin.
She kissed him softly on the lips and then she walked toward the opposite wall, where an open archway stood. Arthur just caught Sir Arthur flicking his wrist and his eyes flashing golden a moment before the princess tripped. She did regain her balance quickly enough though. Morgana gave a puzzled hum and then she disappeared, magically transporting herself away.
Prince Merlin gave the blond knight a meaningful stare, Sir Arthur staring back at him, challenging him; but the dark-haired prince looked away first.
The blond knight looked to his fellow knight and Guinevere. “I’m going with the two of you. Is that all right?” Sir Arthur asked.
With Sir Lancelot and Guinevere acquiescing, the three of them and the two winged steeds exited through the archway.
Both Arthur and the prince mounted their own horses.
Unable to resist, Arthur spoke up, “I saw Sir Arthur tripping the princess. Mind telling me what is going on? Not that I care as this isn’t my world, but something is clearly wrong here.”
Prince Merlin only smiled vaguely at him and said, “We should go,” He informed him.
Arthur was not one to take an obvious evasion lying down. Clearly, Sir Arthur and Prince Merlin had something going on between them, an issue that had the princess caught in the crossfire. Whether the Princess Morgana was unaware of the problem or not, it was a conflict that roused Arthur’s interest. And really, if the princess was anything like his world’s Morgana – who didn’t miss a thing --, then surely, the Princess Morgana here would be privy to the problem? Although she had appeared puzzled after she had been tripped. He wasn’t sure what to think anymore.
“That’s it? You’re just not going to say anything?” He said, frustrated.
Something on Arthur’s face must have convinced Prince Merlin to relent because then he said, “Sir Arthur may tell you…if you get him to drink enough ale,” Merlin finished, grinning at him.
Arthur rolled his eyes. Well, that was helpful. “You’re not being much help.”
“You’re in my world now, Prince Arthur, and this is my kingdom,” Prince Merlin reminded him. “I have a right not to tell you anything. I could throw you in the dungeons if you would like, but I never enjoy doing that.” He gave a slight grimace.
“Right,” Arthur said, still not quite accepting of seeing Merlin – or a Merlin, he supposed – being a prince and having a clear authority over him.
Merlin smiled at him, and then he informed him, “Some of the Knights of Avalon, Sir Arthur included, will have a gathering later this evening. I’m certain that Sir Arthur would allow you to join them.”
“Why?” Arthur asked. He was still very much a stranger to this world. While he did spend time with his own knights back at Camelot, Arthur felt unsure how he would be received here…where he was a complete outsider and these knights all possessed magic, which was something beyond his understanding. “He may share my appearance and name, but still, I truly don’t know him.”
The two of them entered the archway and Arthur found himself outside, at the foot of a great cliff. He could just see the others – Sir Arthur, Sir Lancelot and Guinevere – flying on their mounts ahead of them. A gleaming white castle that almost glowed under the day’s bright sun could be glimpsed off in the distance. Also, startlingly, flying creatures that rather resembled dragons, Arthur thought, were lazily circling the castle.
The prince turned to Arthur and he explained, “You may have never met him face to face before, but you do know him in a different way – an extra sense, you could say. There’s an old story about when you feel alone or sad…you may believe that you are simply reacting to a trying event in your life, but what about when the sadness comes out of nowhere? And you can’t fathom what could be the cause? The bards say that, even across worlds, you could sense another version of yourself, feel their loneliness, their sadness. No matter if you do not know that other worlds exist, the sensation will still be there. And when one of your other selves dies, you feel it. You feel the loss.”
“Are you saying that Sir Arthur is me then? If I had magic and was just a knight instead of a prince?” Arthur concluded, beginning to understand the magnitude of what he had stumbled upon. And it was all thanks to his Merlin – how typical. Only his manservant would contract an illness that could only be treated in another world.
The prince of Avalon nodded. “How the worlds are shaped is a mystery even to me, but yes, you do have a connection to him. It is not a coincidence that you look like him and share the same name after all. Just like it is no coincidence that your friend Merlin and I share the same qualities.”
And with that last remark, the two of them geared their winged horses for flight toward the castle.
~ * ~
They had reached the castle and dismounted their winged steeds, handing them off to ready stable hands, when Arthur, curious, decided to inquire about the dragons.
“So why do you have dragons here? I’m surprised that they appear friendly,” Arthur confided in him as one small dragon – a baby he surmised – flapped its wings awkwardly, at eye level with them, and said hello to Prince Merlin before it flew off. “Back in Camelot, my father killed all the dragons, except one to keep as a trophy, I suppose, during the days of the Purge. He sought to hunt down any and all magic users…and once, I agreed with his ban on magic, but after I discovered Merlin had magic, I have begun to rethink some of my father’s opinions.”
Prince Merlin shuddered. “I do not wish to speak ill of your father, but that is truly a horrible act for him to have committed. I can not imagine if we did not have dragons in Avalon anymore – even less, an outright ban on magic – what a horrible thought!”
“I’ve never felt more grateful for shifting my thoughts on magic. I expect you’d have me locked away if I was against magic?” Arthur speculated.
The dark-haired prince smiled at him in bemusement. “I would have given you a chance, maybe. But if you had stirred trouble, well, there really aren’t many people in Avalon or in my world in general who would back an anti-magic position. You would be out of luck, my friend,” he explained to him.
Arthur had thought as much.
At last, Arthur would get to see for himself if his manservant, his friend, was truly all right.

“As to why we allow dragons to co-exist with us is simple,” Prince Merlin continued on, “The dragons keep magic alive and strong here. They are like a security barrier for us, an assurance that our kingdom will prosper and remain so. In essence, the dragons are sacred entities for all of us. We treat them with deep respect.”
Prince Arthur thought it was intriguing at how similar and yet different one world could be. He could just see his father scoffing at the thought of revering dragons. Then Arthur recalled how he himself had killed a unicorn, another magical creature, and he decided that he still had some way to go. Accepting Merlin’s magic had only been the first step.
The prince showed him inside the castle, and at the blond’s request, he directed him to Merlin’s chambers. At last, Arthur would get to see for himself if his manservant, his friend, was truly all right.

Especially love Prince Merlin's explaination of the connections between the selves of other worlds. Quite unsettling, really, but also beautiful and very, very intriguing. Ahaha, and Sir Arthur tripping Morgana, making Arthur go, "Hmmm," lol. He has some issues to work out. Very looking forward to Arthur and Merlin together again at last!
