Author’s Notes: For
[info]eosrose as a birthday present. For her prompt of "sweltering heat."

~ * ~

Merlin,” Arthur beckoned his Court Sorcerer to him.

The blond was sprawled on his bed, the heat of the day causing him to be lethargic. He was feeling quite comfortable lounging in bed, chest bare and only a light pair of breeches on. The faint breeze from the open window helped a little in combating the unbearable heat. Arthur was grateful for the cool sheets he lay upon, but he needed something more…

Merlin wasn’t sure whether to smile at Arthur’s easy, relaxed mood or roll his eyes at how the king was enjoying being allowed to laze about on this hot day. Far too hot to spend much time outside or conduct any business. Well, at least, there weren't any pressing matters to attend to on this day.

“What, Arthur?” He asked him when he was standing in front of Arthur’s bed.

Arthur sat up, his elbows propping him up, and he nodded at Merlin. “I want you to…you know...” he said vaguely, waving his hand out in front of him.

Merlin just stared at him.

“It could be cooler, and you can help with that,” Arthur explained further, but it didn’t sound like much of an explanation to Merlin’s ears.

Merlin gave him another good stare. “Seriously, Arthur. I thought you’d get over this. You’ve been King for almost a year and you’ve known about my magic for three years now. Why can’t you just use the word ‘magic’? You’re being ridiculous.”

“I did have to keep it from my father for two years, Merlin. Old habits are hard to break. I don’t know why you’re making such a fuss over this.”

Merlin sighed. “Right, well, you do realize you don’t have to keep it a secret anymore? That you could speak freely? How long do you expect me to deal with your ‘hand gestures’? And, by the way, this,” he paused and mimicked Arthur’s hand wave, “is pathetic. Do you even watch me when I do my magic? That’s not how it looks at all!”

“You think I’m ridiculous?” Arthur retorted, “Look at what you’re complaining about! And of course, I do watch when you do your thing, but I apologize if your eyes are distracting enough that I don’t pay attention to what your hands are doing.”

Merlin raised his brow. He held a mischievous look in his eyes. “Oh, like this?” He asked, smiling.

His eyes flashed golden then and different items around the room suddenly floated. One item was a small vase with bright red flowers at Arthur’s bedside table. Merlin had started a tradition of handpicking flowers for Arthur on a regular basis. The gesture was at first as a laugh in lieu of the blond’s past remark about not receiving any flowers from him. But it soon developed into an expected thing.

Though the king would not admit it (flowers were for women to fuss over after all, he was much too manly to get all in a tizzy over some plant), he always felt cheerier whenever he received those flowers from his Court Sorcerer. Arthur thought his day went much more smoothly after getting a fresh bouquet – as if it were almost a good luck charm.

Arthur could only nod at him, willingly being enchanted by those beautiful, glowing eyes.

Merlin moved on top of him, and a moment later, the pleasant spell had been broken.

Upon feeling Merlin’s pale skin against his, Arthur gave him an accusing look. “You’re cold. While I’m suffering here, you’re like an icicle!”

Merlin shifted position so that he was beside Arthur, the blond making room for him. The dark-haired man looked at him in exasperation. “Oh, honestly. It may be hot, but you are certainly not suffering. And it’s not my fault that my magic looks after me without so much as a word from me.”

“Then have your…” Arthur huffed at Merlin’s lingering look, daring him to avoid using the word ‘magic’, “your magic look after my well-being as well. Is that so hard to do?”

Merlin shook his head and he had all the floating items settle to their original places. “No, sorry. I can’t do it,” he said briskly, a tiny but still noticeable smirk on his lips.

He stood up and he pointedly ignored Arthur’s miffed expression.

“Merlin, come on! I said magic properly. Have I done something wrong recently to make you treat me so poorly?”

Merlin looked uncharacteristically composed as he spoke formally, “My magic is not for trivial matters such as providing comfort for Your Majesty. I apologize if you were mistaken. Now, I must attend to my court duties. Enjoy your rest, my lord,” he finished in a serene tone.

Merlin left the room shortly thereafter.

“He has to be upset with me over something. He only addresses me properly when he’s mad at me,” Arthur mused.

He folded his arms behind his head and observed the ceiling. He debated whether he should get up soon and have his breakfast sent up. But then suddenly, a blast of cold water fell down on his head.

“Merlin,” Arthur muttered under his breath, but he smiled all the same. He hadn’t been expecting it, but hell if that spray of cold water didn’t help to do the trick.

From outside of Arthur’s chambers, Merlin grinned and he snapped his fingers. Oh, if Arthur thought that was the end of it, then the king was in for a surprise.

But first, Arthur would have to leave his rooms for the Court Sorcerer to initiate his second ‘magic trick.’

~ * ~

Arthur did leave his chambers after eating his breakfast. It hadn’t been easy, but he felt it wouldn’t do to remain in his room the entire day. What sort of impression would that make after all? Not a good one, certainly.

He did return to his room midday to have his lunch.

Startled was one way to put it when the blond opened the door to his chambers. He found snow, honest to goodness snow, falling from the ceiling as if the ceiling were the sky. And a chill definitely pervaded the room. In this hot summer weather, the cool of winter was much appreciated.

Only Merlin could be behind this…but where was that mischievous sorcerer?

The problem was that Arthur wasn’t looking low enough. Feeling something rub up against his leg, the blond peered down to discover a black kitten with golden eyes in front of him.

The king knelt down so he could reach out to touch the creature. Happily, the kitten allowed Arthur to take him in his arms.

“Merlin…while I appreciate what you’ve done, what is the purpose of being a kitten?” He asked him, standing up and petting the kitten who purred in obvious pleasure.

Merlin the kitten lifted his furry head to look up at Arthur. He only answered him with a “meow”, and since Arthur couldn’t decipher cat language – that didn’t help at all.

Merlin snuggled against Arthur’s chest, and Arthur was left hoping that Merlin would lift this snow/cold spell, whatever it was, before his chambers were buried in snow and the temperature was freezing. Yes, the weather outside was humid and unpleasant, but this was a little too much.

When the kitten started to squirm in the king’s hold, Arthur set him down.

Arthur should have really seen it coming… he really should have. Merlin stared at Arthur intently and then…

~ * ~

Seeing the black kitten stop before her in the corridor, Gwen knelt down to pet the small animal.

“Always so friendly, aren’t you, Merlin?” She murmured as he purred happily at her attentions.

Unfortunately, a not so friendly Arthur, who was currently a white kitten, came up behind Merlin. He had a decidedly displeased look on his face. When Gwen reached out to pet Arthur as well, he shied away and hissed at her.

Then he proceeded to paw at Merlin, trying to get his attention.

Merlin refused to give in and instead he ran off down the corridor. Arthur followed after him in hot pursuit.

Gwen stood up and shrugged. Arthur was always a bit possessive, she had to admit.

No matter how hot the day became, there was no doubt that with those two around, the day certainly would be far from a dull one.

Awwww....Merlin and Arthur as kittens is just too precious for words :D. I love their dynamic so much; it's great! :D Thanks for sharing this cute little fic :)

Thank you for reading! :) I completely agree with you about Merlin and Arthur as kittens -- simply too cute for words, yes. *nods*

That was cute. I liked that Arthur expected Merlin to do all these magic tricks for him.

Thank you! Yes, Arthur has become a bit demanding when it comes to Merlin using magic for his sake. Considering the hot weather, who wouldn't take advantage of asking for a cooling spell if the option is available to them? ;)

Thank you! I'm glad that you enjoyed this. I'm glad that the kittens worked for you. I can't resist turning the both of them into cute, little animals. :)

Now I can see Arthur as a Baby Tiger. I just love them lol. Maybe he could adopt one.

[identity profile] dk323.livejournal.com 2010-07-05 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I could certainly see Arthur as a baby tiger. That would suit him, I believe. Arthur would definitely consider adopting one -- I can see that happening.

And I can see you writing that. xD

Hmm, well I would definitely have to look up how tigers behave. I don't want to get that wrong. I have a full plate right now as far as fics, but you never know. Maybe I'll get inspired. :)

The thought of them as kittens is unbelievably adorable! Loved it :D

Awwww I want a Merlin kitten and a Arthur one as well now ^^
This was funny and adorable

Aw, thank you. :) I'm glad that you enjoyed this. I'm with you on wanting Merlin and Arthur kittens. :) I'm sure an Arthur kitten is a given because he'll refuse to have someone take Merlin away without him coming along as well (you get one, you're stuck with the other ;)).

Awww Merlin and Arthur kitten are lovely. I liked how Arthur still had trouble saying 'magic'.

[identity profile] dk323.livejournal.com 2010-07-05 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! Yes, I have a weakness for Merlin and Arthur as kittens/small fluffy animals. Who could resist them? ;)

Arthur's learning...it's just a bit hard to adjust after 2 years of making sure Uther didn't find out about Merlin. Aww, Arthur. ;)

Thanks for reading and commenting. :D

Kittens! I liked this quite a lot. :D

I'm really glad that you enjoyed this. :) Kittens are too cute -- especially Merlin and Arthur kittens. *nods* Thanks for reading! :D

I love how Gwen is not even remotely surprised at finding her friend and king running around as kittens. I can't help but wonder what other things Merlin might have subjected the whole castle to. *snorfle*

Adorable!

[identity profile] dk323.livejournal.com 2010-07-06 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! Yes, fortunately (or unfortunately ;)), everyone is quite used to Merlin's magic tricks that they don't even bat an eye anymore. I could only imagine all the other things people had to deal with -- transforming into kittens is probably not so bad compared to how crazy things can become.

Thank you for reading and commenting! :D

Aww, that is a fluffy pile of cuteness, between the snow and the kittens. Imagining Arthur as a kitten with a pissy face made me lol, as did his vague hand gestures at the beginning. Mm, and that was one nice opening image of Arthur sprawled on the bed; it sucked me into the story, and then distracted me for a minute before I could move on. I think my favorite detail, though, is Merlin picking flowers for Arthur every day. N'awww. :)

[identity profile] dk323.livejournal.com 2010-07-06 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Aw thank you! Er...you're welcome for distracting you with Arthur? ;) I'm glad my diversion worked. *whistles*

Oh, I'm glad you liked that bit. That was one of my favorite parts to write because it was a nice little happy ending to Arthur's "complaint" in "The Nightmare Begins." I couldn't resist having Merlin deciding to give Arthur flowers on a regular basis. :)
