~ Merlin 4x01 ~ The Darkest Hour Part One

Series 4 | Episode 01

Okay, first things first. I hope someone got what Merlin said in this one part. My friend and I watched the scene in question multiple times, but we couldn't quite understand what Merlin/Colin Morgan was trying to say. It was the last bit of what he said to Gaius before he departed with Arthur and the knights. It was like, "I will gladly die, Gaius, knowing that one day, ..." <-- this very last part after "one day" is uncertain. Just now, I've figured it's "Albion will live" because it seems to make the most sense. IDEK. Maybe my head was really fuzzy yesterday.

Anyone correct me if I'm wrong and if it is "Albion will live" then yay for figuring it out myself. :p I still think it sounded a bit too slurred and the words were colliding with each other/it was said too fast. I still love you, Colin Morgan! Sometimes this stuff happens. :p

Yes, there were much more noteworthy things in this episode, and yet I'm hung up on "Albion will live." Admittedly, it was quite fun trying to decipher it and what my friend and I thought of...omg. *sigh* (there was, "I'll be livin'" -- ghetto!Merlin ;) OR "I'll be livid"... fun times *whistles*)

On to thoughts about the episode:

New film quality! I like it. What I like even more is that they finally changed "young boy" to "young man." I had hoped that the reason why John Hurt came in to do some recording was partly to edit the outdated beginning voiceover. Personally, I think they really should have changed "young man" starting with Series 2... that it took this long not to mention with the multiple time jumps... *shakes head* At least the show finally rectified the matter. Thank goodness! I loved the new look of the intro sequence -- S3 clips in there yay! Honestly, just the simple change to "young man" is giving me hope for S4. Though I'm prepared to be disappointed as the show hasn't had the best track record with consistent, believable character development. Aw well -- as long as Bradley & Colin are there, I'll watch. I've missed them & it's so nice to have them back on my [laptop] screen.

Morgana is looking really good... I do miss her pretty, pretty dresses; but her black dress works. She'll look good in anything, I think. Kind of cool how she has Agravaine as her mole/spy in Camelot and Arthur has no idea yet how she's been duping him for months with having Agravaine in Camelot "helping" Arthur since Uther is out of commission. Morgana = kickass even if I don't like that she'll be looking to hurt Merlin this season...but you know, par for the course. Nothing new there.

I love the Merlin and Lancelot interaction. I'm just so glad to see more Lancelot since he's barely been on the show overall, so to have him in an episode is happy-making. When Lancelot found out about Merlin's magic in S1 and promised to keep it secret and then JUST LEFT Camelot...I was like, "Well, that was lame. Merlin finally have someone new who knows about his magic and is cool with it and then Lancelot leaves..." I know Santiago Cabrera is busy with other projects and all, and I'm glad he's getting other work because he's a great actor; but still...Merlin needs more people on his side who know about his magic and be there for Merlin to lean on sometimes. I'm looking forward to more Merlin & Lancelot interaction in the next episode... judging by the promo pics, there should be some. :D

I loved the Merlin and Arthur banter -- mostly because it was comfortable and friendly and there was no throwing of things! Score. :-) I loved that Arthur told Merlin twice (ok, both in a roundabout way, I suppose) that he thought Merlin was brave. Yay! That was a good step in the right direction.

It's so like Merlin to put himself on the line for Arthur...to sacrifice himself like that by jumping out in front of Arthur...and then being subsequently attacked by the Dorocha. Poor hurt!Merlin. :-( :-(

The trouble with these two-part episodes is the first part ends on a cliffhanger and this one ended with Merlin hurt...leaving me to wait another week for the hurt/comfort portion of the episode. H/C is the best part! Is it next Saturday yet? *resigned sigh*

The Arthur/Gwen stuff... what got me through that is seeing that trailer beforehand where Arthur yells at Gwen (uh oh, trouble in paradise?) and the Gwen/Lancelot action... though I think the Lancelot in that future scene isn't truly Lancelot since it's always more fun to involve magic and trick people. IDEK. MY MIND HASN'T CHANGED. I STILL BELIEVE GWEN AND LANCELOT HAVE BETTER CHEMISTRY WITH ONE ANOTHER THAN ARTHUR AND GWEN.

Yes, Bradley James/Arthur and Angel Coulby/Gwen do a decent job in the Arthur/Gwen scenes (although some of their promo pics together from S3, for example, look not so good in my opinion...);  but at the end of the day, it's not working for me as a whole. Maybe the show shouldn't have introduced Lancelot so early on and show how much he appreciated Gwen before she wore a more form-fitting dress. Because Arthur noticing Gwen in early S2 like that makes Arthur a bit of a shallow princess (as Gwaine would say).

Enough of the love triangle drama... I want to end with bringing up how awesome the knights were and the awesome things they did. I LOVE THEM. DON'T EVER CHANGE, LANCELOT, GWAINE, LEON, PERCIVAL AND ELYAN! I loled at Gwaine and Percival snagging a chicken and Merlin helping them out. :-) And then later, Elyan and Percival working together to save those little children. Awww!! Gwaine biting into an apple! :p Haha. I love you, Gwaine. :-)

I can't wait for the next episode. :) New Merlin for the next twelve weeks! *squees* ♥ ♥ ♥

I can confirm it's Albion will live.

I am glad Morgana might be in charge this season instead of a pawn.

So pleased to have Lancelot back as Merlin's best friend. It's just lovely to see their interaction.

Also delighted that Merlin/Arthur is back! And properly this time! Long may it continue.

LANCELOT/GWEN ARE SO DAMN PERFECT. They work better than A/G. Even though I was not fond of Gwen this ep.

Knights though - yay!

Thank you. It was you mentioning Albion in your review post that got me figuring it out. :)

I agree - it'd be great to see Morgana with more agency and taking charge. I still miss the old Morgana a bit, but if she manages to be kickass this season as a dark sorceress, then that'll help. It's somewhat better now since everyone knows she's bad news, so we don't have to deal with her evil smirks that are supposed to 'secretive.'

I love Merlin and Lancelot's friendship and yes, it's great to see that explored.

I hope that the Merlin/Arthur interaction will continue like this for the rest of the season as well. I loved that it was done properly and no reset. :) Albeit, doing a reset like they did with the S2 premiere would've been a false move. I'm so optimistic for positive development for Merlin/Arthur. All right, maybe cautiously optimistic. :p That's a safer way to think. ;)

YES. LANCELOT/GWEN = FTW. Yeah, I felt like Gwen was twisting a knife into Lancelot's heart when she told him to look after Arthur...she has to know that Lancelot still has affections for her after their history. It would've been better if she had spoken to Elyan since he's her brother and going on the mission as well. And really, there's a big lack of interaction between Gwen and Elyan that you almost forget they're actually siblings - the pair could certainly do with a conversation or two. *shakes head*

The knights were awesome! *grins* I think Percival and Elyan rescuing those children was my favorite knights moment. :)

Oh how I've missed your reaction posts for Merlin!

"it's not working for me as a whole" Me either. I'm not going to lie - I should angry things at my tv whenever they have a scene.

Merlin/Arthur remain flawless

The knights are all kinds of epic.

Next weeks episode looks heart wrenching... I can't wait!!!!

Aw thanks! I'm glad you enjoy them. :) It was a brilliant premiere and I just couldn't resist diving back in to doing reaction posts..."Merlin" just has that effect on me. ♥

I feel you there on the Arthur/Gwen. I groan a bit at their scenes. Some of their moments are all right, but I mostly yearn for the A/G scene to be done so that we can have more Merlin/Arthur moments. :)

Merlin/Arthur was so flawless, omg yes. What a great episode for their friendship.

The knights were pretty much the definition of epic. *grins*

Yes I agree about next week's episode. I saw a teaser from episode 2 and heartwrenching is the best way to describe that particular scene. I don't know if you've seen the teaser...don't know if you want to be spoiled or not.

Here's the link to the clip if you're interested:

For Merlin/Arthur fans, it's like Christmas has come early if you watch that clip. ;)

Yes, it's Albion will live. Which I think is very cool.

I loved the Merlin and Lance interactions. They were so good together.

I'm glad I sort of figured it out on my own. I was way off by thinking it started with "I'll..." and that's what threw me off. :p I think the line is cool too -- but poor Merlin so ready to sacrifice himself like that. :(

Yes I agree completely about the great Merlin and Lancelot interaction in this episode. I'm looking forward to some more of that in the next episode. :)

Lol, it was fun trying to figure out that line but I'm glad to now know for sure. Yay, I love your recaps!

LOL WHEN GWAINE BIT THE APPLE. Gwaine is the best. Except for when the best is Percival, whose arms CANNOT BE CONTAINED BY SLEEVES. EVEN WHEN THE SLEEVE ARE MADE OF CHAINMAIL. XD Loving all the Knights. Although really good point about the lack of Gwen and Elyan interaction-- I would really love to see some sibling moments.

Yeah, I wish Arthur/Gwen didn't make me facepalm as much as it does, but I am looking forward to Gwen/Lancelot. Having thought about it, though, Gwen was AWESOME this episode-- there she is taking care of Uther, the man who only, oh yeah-- KILLED HER FATHER. :| The fact of her doing that for Arthur's sake really does speak volumes about her love for him, so dear lord, show, we really don't need dramatic strings during their interactions! Oooh, show. Ilu. Yeah, I really want Gwen to have some happiness, so bring on the Lance/Gwen fluff, please.

Lancelot and Merlin BFF-itude is my favorite, except for how my favorite is always and forever Arthur and Merlin and their constipated feelings. Oh, boys. <3
