~ Merlin 4x04 ~ Aithusa (white dragon FTW)

So much squee! ♥ ♥

THE DRAGON!

OMG. OMG. Baby!dragon. I remember being so surprised and excited to see those three baby dragons on Game of Thrones -- I just knew I would be just as excited and squeeful to see a baby dragon on "Merlin." I was hoping that since there would be a dragon egg in this episode that they'd just have to let the dragon hatch out of his egg. It just wouldn't be right to only have a dragon egg and not to have a kickass scene where we see the baby dragon.

And I'm so glad that I wasn't disappointed. *SQUEE* Although since Aithusa is a male, no chance of mating then to produce more dragons...since Kilgharrah is a male too. Oh well, you know...magic makes anything possible! :p

I like that Aithusa means "light of the sun" in dragontongue and because of that as well as the dragon being a white dragon, this bodes well for the Albion Merlin and Arthur will build together. This positive sign helps a bit for me in light of the grim outlook presently what with Arthur being anti-magic after Uther was killed by magic. I feel this is the show's attempt to assuage viewers' concerns by having this dragon born...and giving us hope as a result.

Or maybe they just wanted to distract us with a cute little baby dragon so we wouldn't think too much about an anti-magic King Arthur and Merlin still needing to work behind Arthur's back.

Interesting how here a dragon can live in an egg for up to 1,000 years before it's hatched.

♥ ♥ ♥ I loved Merlin tearing up a bit when Aithusa was born. Awww. Oh Merlin. He's so happy -- it's like he's the dragon's father. So cute. *gets the warm fuzzies*

THE SOUP

I was watching this with my friend (we saw 4x01 together, and this is the second S4 episode we watched together...we're on a roll! :-)) and my friend was wondering what was with the odd focus on Merlin making and serving the soup to Arthur and his knights. And then Merlin didn't get time to eat soup himself because Arthur was being a pratface and telling him to feed the horses. *frowns*

The soup bit was a rather bizarre thing to focus some time on...my friend thought that maybe Merlin was drugging Arthur & his knights by putting something in the soup and maybe that's why the others enjoyed the soup rather a lot. :p I suggested Merlin might have put alcohol in the soup to get them drunk (they did appear overly happy a bit) so that Merlin could get them out of commission for a little while so he could get to the dragon egg and stop Borden.

But then we find out that it's Borden that does the drugging by getting that shooting that pouch (full of life-threatening powder most likely?) in the soup later on. Of course since Merlin doesn't seem to get the chance to eat his share of the soup, he isn't likely to get drugged like the others. And maybe the first soup scene is to remind the viewer that Merlin is a still a servant, backing up Borden's statement in the tower about Merlin just being a serving boy and the power that having a dragon would give him. It harkens back to 2x01 with Cornelius Sigan intimating the same thing to Merlin. And again, Merlin turns the offer down as we knew he would.

I love how Merlin told Borden that he was the last Dragonlord and then Merlin proceeded to kickass. Also, can't forget Merlin realizing Arthur & his knights had been drugged and could die...and fortunately Merlin's healing magic (is he getting more powerful now? Shame his healing magic doesn't work all the time :() managed to prevent them from dying.

And of course Merlin healed Arthur first. Awww.

Also, I loved the moment where Arthur saved Merlin from walking into the branch by grabbing his tunic... er... doesn't sound as impressive writing it out like that. But still, it's the thought that counts. :)

ARTHUR GETS PANTSED

Muahahaha. I read a spoiler that Arthur's trousers would fall again in this episode, but I didn't know the circumstances surrounding it. I definitely didn't know that Arthur would get pantsed and *tackled* (OMG DYING LAUGHING) by Merlin in front of a serious! strategy meeting with his advisors. You can definitely see how desperate Merlin was to get that dragon egg by doing what he had to in order to get that key from Arthur's belt. This show is a bit crap at continuity, so I suppose the advisors will forget Arthur's very unkingly moment of being pretty much attacked/tackled by his own servant and getting pantsed.

Of course it's a gold mine for Merlin/Arthur fans. The M/A vidders have gotten one amazing early Christmas gift! I had to pause the episode right after the tackle/pantsed scene so my friend and I could properly digest what the hell just happened. It was a very surreal experience. Fanservice to the extreme. It's like -- did that really just happen? Did Merlin really make Arthur's trouser fall down and then proceed to tackle him? Am I seeing things right?

Yes, yes. This show is getting sooo much darker, yes. LOL. ARTHUR GETS PANTSED (second time his trousers are down for those keeping score :p).

In retrospect, it makes sense why Arthur was being mean to Merlin by telling him to feed the horses later on and not giving him the chance to eat...must be payback for making him look silly in front of his advisors by tackling him and making a scene. :p

A bit of Gaius! fail... yes, I understand his caution regarding Borden and not wanting Merlin to work with that shady man... but really, Merlin is the last Dragonlord. Of course Merlin can't help it to try getting that dragon egg. It's his solemn duty. And Kilgharrah advised him to get the egg, so who is Merlin to go against the Slash Dragon's words?

Gaius was denying the chance for us to see a little baby dragon being born! Shame on him. :p

Overall, I enjoyed this episode because I'm easily swayed by dragon egg hunts that end in a baby dragon being born. And Arthur gets pantsed and tackled by Merlin. Seriously. HOW CAN ANY SCENE BEAT THAT ONE? ;)

Next Episode:

No Merlin attempting to take care of a baby dragon secretly in Camelot. Hey, most everyone in Camelot is blind to when he does magic, I think he can pull this "looking after a baby dragon" thing off rather well. :p

All that said, since the episode will be missing that... it will feel lacking. *sadface* Think of the comedic potential! Alas, the CGI budget probably won't allow for a baby dragon in the rest of the episodes.

So anyway, the debate for this episode is whether Arthur will kill a man in cold blood...and Arthur ends up bringing a war upon Camelot. Morgana is involved. Shit just got real? Um...

I miss Aithusa the white dragon already. *pets him*

I loved this episode.

We had Merlin be all powerful and showing off for once. I loved that. He is the last Dragon Lord.

The pants moment - it was fanservice and I do not care. It was just... I loved it. Especialyl when they rolled around the floor.

And that ending, with Merlin's face and the baby dragon. LOVE.

So yeah good episode. :D

I loved Merlin showing off and giving Borden what for by saying he's the last Dragonlord and Borden has no hope of thwarting him. Awesome. :)

Such fanservice, I agree! The very best kind. I almost couldn't believe I had just watched a scene like that. It was too funny. :p

I *love* the baby dragon too. Aithusa is so cute and precious. Like I said in my review, I kind of wish we can have Merlin looking after Aithusa *secretly* in Camelot, but the CGI budget won't allow for it. Shame. :(

I enjoyed the lighter tone of the episode and the heartwarming ending with the dragon being born. ♥ Awww. :)

I'm with you on the reaction to the baby dragon. I felt the same way.

I was laughing too. I wasn't expecting the pantsing to happen in front of Arthur's advisors during a serious business strategy!meeting. As always, Merlin has the best timing. :p It was comedy gold, yes. :D

Yes, it was nice not to see Gwen...it is strange how there are some episodes where there is no Gwen or Morgana in sight. But then Merlin and Arthur are in a scene together and I forget about Gwen and Morgana. Funny how that works. :p

It's pretty great how Arthur woke up twice in a row with Merlin right over him, and instead of being all shocked and indignant just gives a sleepy, "Oh, hey. What are you doing? It's early." LOL

Silly Arthur! You always have to check for woodworms in the morning!

THAT'S WHEN THEY'RE MOST ACTIVE

[identity profile] dk323.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I completely agree. I'm sure Arthur's rather used to this type of behavior from Merlin. That's why he's so chilled out about it. :p Loved those little moments - definitely hit a good comedic note.

Haha yes. Woodworms must be checked in the morning - Arthur should know this. :p Oh Merlin. It reminds of the scene from the Freya episode where Merlin takes one of Morgana's dresses and Gwen finds him. And Merlin's moth excuse and everyone running around naked if the problem isn't dealt with. :p

I loved the whole Arthur got panted thing. Oh, Merlin. Oh, fanservice.

That pantsing moment certainly will be in my Top 10 favorite moments of S4. I can't believe a scene like that made it into the episode, but I'm glad it did. :) *squee*
