OMG! SPN SEASON 5 PREMIERE
“SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL”
I can’t believe it! I know it has been one of the theories in fandom for how Dean would defeat Lucifer, but it’s awesome to actually hear it on the show. Dean is the archangel Michael’s chosen vessel! So cool…I almost feel guilty for wanting this to happen even though it’s against the basis of the show.
I know the show is supposed to be about the average human who does the best they can in extraordinary circumstances (fighting the supernatural). The whole being taken over by an angel is the antithesis of that – especially for Dean who has always been presented as the more average of the two while Sam had his psychic powers and everything. Dean, on the other hand, only had his training, passion and leadership skills…and all that combined made him rather exceptional, but no one really truly acknowledged that until the angels came along in season 4.
So, I’m of two minds regarding this. I’m ridiculously excited about the prospect of Dean being the “Michael sword”/his vessel, but then again, I’m glad (of course they have to do it this way) that they’re drawing it out…that Dean isn’t so gung-ho about giving his consent to be Michael’s vessel. That was hardcore how Dean refused despite what Zachariah did to “convince” him to be the vessel.
I’m looking forward to seeing how it all plays out as the season progresses…
Love that Castiel (best surprise ever!) saved Sam and Dean and was all awesome as I knew he’d be! So, based on what Castiel was insinuating (which threw me for a loop) was that the angels hadn’t taken Sam and Dean away from the danger of Lucifer (by placing them on an airplane), but it looks like God has returned (or maybe he just made it seem like he’d “left the building” in Zachariah’s words in the S4 finale) and got the brothers to safety.
…*is distracted* So excited to see Castiel again! He looked a little different – loved how he was more kickass and authoritative. He seems to be fitting into the role of renegade angel rather well though I’m shamelessly biased.
Too bad he kept silent about what really happened to him…after Chuck said he was blown to pieces – how in the world did Castiel come out of that unscathed? Maybe one of the Archangels or even God is on his side? Hmmm…all speculation now.
And that man, Nick, being “circled” by Lucifer as his chosen vessel. Very interesting, and effective in my opinion. I thought Lucifer’s argument was rather persuasive and I could understand how by the end of the episode, the man agreed to be Lucifer’s vessel. Your faith is tested rather harshly if you see your family senselessly murdered and you wonder why this was brought down upon you? Why would God do such a thing? It’s difficult for one’s faith not to be irreparably shattered after that…
I was expecting the fallout at the very end where Dean lays it out to Sam straight – trust has been lost. Period. That’s it. I understand Dean – after Sam chose Ruby over his own brother and then brought on the apocalypse (however unintentionally and misguided, it still happened), how could Dean not feel a chill wind and really rethink his relationship with Sam? It’s tough, real tough. Like Dean said, he had depended on Sam and then he was let down.
I wasn’t expecting Bobby being possessed by a demon, but so glad that it didn’t last. That shocked the hell out of me. So, I wonder if it’s really true and he’ll never walk again…
Meg is back! I thought this actress had a little bit of a lisp like she was trying to sound like the original!Meg, but it didn’t quite work out that way.
All in all, this premiere was a promising one and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season. :- )

I don't know that the particular way they're handling this makes this necessarily true. Zachariah flat out said that Dean's only special power is his ability to let the archangel Michael come to earth and do all the work. If he's telling the truth and Dean and Sam find a way to defeat Lucifer anyway (with no angel powers and no demon powers) then you really do have the story of average men struggling through extraordinary circumstances.

I do really hope that Dean and Sam find another way to defeat Lucifer. Thought, at the moment, I'm at a loss as to how they'll go about it without angelic assistance. Hopefully the writers have something inventive up their sleeves...

Agreed Dean was very hardcore with Zachariah and I loved it. He was like the Dean of old. I wonder if this hardcore Dean will keep this up.

Agreed he looked different. Did they change his hair? He's really sure of himself now. If he was God who brought him back then he knows God is one his side which would make him pretty sure on himself.

I say God brought him back, gave him back his human body. I don't think he was put back together. I think he got the same deal as Anna - got to keep the same body. I believe it's God. Who else would have that much power? It scared Zachariah who didn't understand how Cas was back.
I agree with just about everything you said:D
I didn't see Bobby with demon inside him. I can't help but think that's a bit of stupidly on the brother's part. Put salt around the doors and windows which meants any demon in a human body couldn't get in.

That moment made the episode for me - I was like, "They're really going there?? OMG."
Well, maybe they could have a "What if Michael took over Dean?" scenario, but in the actual fight that doesn't happen? Then those who want Dean as Dean to defeat Lucifer are happy and those curious to see Dean taken over by an angel will have a glimpse...
Agreed Dean was very hardcore with Zachariah and I loved it. He was like the Dean of old. I wonder if this hardcore Dean will keep this up.
I got Season 1! Dean vibes, for some reason. Just his actions and his look reminded me of how he was in the past. I wonder if that's intentional. I do miss S1! Dean because he seemed much more at ease and sure of himself... I definitely don't mind him being all hardcore - Dean's not going to let angels like Zachariah push him around.

Yes, there must be something Castiel is privy to that is making him more confident. I think mostly I felt his voice sounded a little different - much more intense, I think. His hair looked a bit different too, but it was the change in voice/tone that struck me the most.

I think that makes the most sense. Someone high up is on Castiel's side, which could only help Dean. I do wonder what Cas thinks about Dean being Michael's vessel? Does he, like Zachariah, see this as the only option they have? If any angel could persuade Dean to consent to being taken over by an angel, it would have to be Castiel.

Yeah, I agree. They forgot to take all the necessary procedures, which is all the more essential with the apocalypse upon them! *shakes head*

The more I think about it the more I want to see Micheal but not in Dean's body. I want them to interact. I want Dean as himself to defeat Lucifer. I want Dean/Sam/Cas to defeat Lucifer together.

I really loved the season one vibes:D I miss that Dean and the angsty Dean of season four just broke my heart. I hope this season will be Dean moving forward. The devil is walking on earth, angels and demons played games behind the scenes and now the world is at sake. I hope he's hardcore kick ass Dean ready to try to save the world instead "I feel so guilty/I can't do it" Dean.

I know what you mean. He knows (believes) God is on his side and the path he is walking is the right one. Poor Cas had doubts before but it must be freeing, as well as scary, to be thinking for himself now.

I wonder about what Cas thinks about it too. I don't trust Zachariah not to be on Lucifer's side. Maybe his plan to get Micheal in Dean's body is to kill them both at the same time or stop Dean by having angel on Zachariah's side in his body. I agree with you that Castiel is the only one who could persuade Dean to be a vessel.
Yeah, I agree. They forgot to take all the necessary procedures, which is all the more essential with the apocalypse upon them! *shakes head*
I wanted to slap them for that one. But I guess they are just freaking out about the apocalypse and sudden plane trip that just didn't think. I hope they learned their lesson. I can see why they didn't salt the windows/doors before because they thought Rudy was on side and thus she come and go. Now they know never trust a demon and salt the bloody room! lol
