Supernatural 5.02: Good God, Y'All

Episode 5.02
“Good God, Y’All”

Castiel! Still delivering lines with a straight face, I see. I didn’t catch all of it, but I did start laughing when Dean mentioned something about [Edit with more correct lines...:P] “Try New Mexico, I hear God is on a tortilla” and then Cas, all serious as always is like, “God is not on any flat bread.” Like I said, I was cracking up as that golden exchange was occurring so beats me what the exact words were.

Oh, Cas…don’t ever change. :P

And oh! So cool that the Dean’s amulet (the one Sam gave to him that one Christmas years ago) is a sort of “God EMF” that burns out when God is near. Looks like the writers have finally given a concrete use for that amulet.

Also, I found it telling of the direction of Sam and Dean’s relationship, their previously close bond, is clearly shifting. With the amulet being the symbol of the bond Sam and Dean have with each other (since Sam gave it to Dean and Dean has worn it around his neck ever since); now that Dean handed over the amulet to Castiel; it’s definitely showing how Dean’s trust is shifting…that he’ll be looking to Castiel more.

I know Castiel had a good reason to ask for the amulet, that it had nothing to do with Dean giving up a “symbol” of his bond with Sam; but you know…it just felt like a significant moment for me.

And this is emphasized at the end of the episode where Sam tells Dean that they should go their separate ways. I think this is a good idea because I would like to see Dean to focus on honing his leadership skills without having to worry about Sam and the chance he might go back to the “dark side.” Though, I’m sure Lucifer will find his way to Sam…it’s only fitting. Okay, well, I know for sure this’ll happen because I’ve been reading all the spoilers shamelessly. But how can anyone not guess that that’s coming? Dean has an angel, and Sam will now have Lucifer, the freakin’ devil on his shoulder.

Poor Castiel – I knew he was going to be powered down and “cut off from Heaven” but it must be hard for him. He still has teleportation powers though, so that’s good. It was a nice touch when he had to call Sam and Dean via cellphone because of the sigil hiding the two from angels. So of course that includes Cas as well. That would have been a nasty plothole if the writers hadn’t covered their bases.

I’m glad they addressed what Castiel did for Dean – all that he gave up and the apocalypse still came despite it. I wasn’t surprised that Castiel would be frustrated and bitter over it…at least it’s not to the point where he’s turning his back on Dean completely. Then again, Cas really has no one else to turn to, and Dean is one of the main hopes to end the apocalypse. If Cas doesn’t find God, of course… Poor Cas! “…keep your opinions to yourself.” Dean better be nicer to him in the next episode! (looks like Dean and Cas will spend some quality time together in next week’s episode while Sam is visited by his dead girlfriend and the devil/Lucifer. What a bummer for Sam. : P).

Cool storyline – Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse…in this episode, it was War. Creative way to have people turn on each other – make people think the other person is a demon and needs to be killed when really they’re all just hallucinating.

It was nice to see Ellen, Jo and Rufus again…I liked Rufus the most, Ellen coming in second. Jo just leaves me a bitter taste in my mouth from how they forced Jo/Dean in season 2. She was all right in this episode though.

Sam needs a hug, I think. He’s messed up…hopefully some time away from Dean and hunting will help (you know when he’s not being visited by his dead girlfriend and Lucifer…ouch, best of luck there, Sammy. You just might need it…).

I loved the "God is not on any flat bread" LOL he seems to think on it for second before answeing seriously *giggles* I agree Cas don't change because you rock the way you are.

I was so busy watching the show and being dumb that I missed the symbolism of the necklace till you pointed it out. I feel so blind now because it's right there!

I think Sam is stupid for leaving. It's what the darkside want which is why War brought it up. They want him away from Dean. I would love to see Dean as you say but I still think Sam is being stupid. He playing right into their hands and he's lost in his own issues to see it. War just destoried a town by planting a idea and setting back to let humans do the dirty work. (okay I know that's really oversimplify it but go with it). He did the same thing to Sam. Played on his fears and planted an idea. Yes, there is truth to it but he's playing into their hand by leaving.

I feel so bad for Cas it's gotta be so hard for him. He put it all on the line (even died for it), and as he said, it was all for nothing. He doesn't even have Anna anymore. It must be very lonely. He is hunted by brothers and sisters who he's stood side by side with for hundreds of thousands of years. Being cut off from heaven must hurt too. I'm glad he still has some powers. I'm glad they addressed it too. Dean and Cas need these 'fights' to keep each other in check.

It was great to see the old gang again. I like that they aren't forgotten. I liked Jo but I'm so pleased there was no romantic crap with her and Dean. It's a better story without that between the two of them. I forgot how much I loved Ellen till I saw her again. I love the slap she gave Dean after the hug. True mother figure for the boys:D:p

Sam needs support and Dean might not be the right one to give it to him. He can't trust him right now and he needs to lead the fight against evil right now. There very little time for getting over things and helpeing Sam. Sam is trying to overcome an powerful addiction. Sure the physical stuff is gone but the mental stuff needs a lot of work. Maybe Bobby could help him...I know if things where differnet the boys could sort this out and be there for each other. But there's no time:(

Oh yes. Thanks for giving me the actual line (wow, did I transcribe that wrong). I just watched the scene again and it's still so funny. I could watch those two interact the entire show, really. Dean's snark vs. Castiel's straight-faced, deadpan answers. Comedy gold. :P

I was so busy watching the show and being dumb that I missed the symbolism of the necklace till you pointed it out. I feel so blind now because it's right there!

The symbolism added that something extra to that scene. I don't know if Kripke originally had a plan to make that amulet significant to the storyline, but I like what he's doing with it now. I still remember all the way back in S1's "Skin" where I wondered what was so special about that amulet. Especially when they put a close-up on Dean's face as he took the amulet back from the shapeshifter who stole it from him. Now the amulet has real significance, which is cool.

Yeah, Sam hasn't been making the best decisions lately. Sam and Dean could use this time apart, but then again, maybe Sam really needs someone to watch out for him. What with Lucifer itching to see him... I agree -- Sam played right into War's trap.

I feel so bad for Cas it's gotta be so hard for him.

Yes, I feel awful for him! I think I heard Anna might be coming back. I'm not completely certain though. I'm glad Castiel made it clear to Dean that what he did for Dean - led to painful costs for him and Cas is still reeling from it. How could he not be angered and frustrated by his current predicament - playing renegade angel?

It was great to see the old gang again.

Yes, I agree. It was awesome to see Ellen again. She's a great mother-figure for the boys. I was glad to see Rufus too - he's a hardened hunter, but at least he's not crazy like Gordon. So it's nice they decided to bring Rufus back - and he was awesome to boot. :-)

They realized that the Jo/Dean didn't work, so I'm glad they're not trying to force it anymore.

Sure the physical stuff is gone but the mental stuff needs a lot of work.

Yeah, the mental turmoil is going to be a lot harder to get past. Dean has always been by Sam's side -- it's about time Sam find someone (who's not Dean) who he could truly trust to help him with his problems. But like you said, there's no time to go that route...

Cool - I'll check it out. :-)

I wanted it twice and the second time I wrote it down while watching it the second time. I could easily do the same! I would love just a whole hour of just Dean's snark vs. Castiel's straight-faced, deadpan answers. They really are comedy gold:D I can't wait for the next episode!

The symbolism added that something extra to that scene. I don't know if Kripke originally had a plan to make that amulet significant to the storyline, but I like what he's doing with it now. It really does add something extra. I dunno if Kripke originally planed it or if he he thought "that would be a cool idea to use for this story". Didn't Dean say in Skin that the amulet being his good luck charm or it kept him safe or something? I can't remember the quote. Now I want to own my own look alive of Dean's amulet. I always wanted one from day one but now I want one more lol.

Yeah, Sam hasn't been making the best decisions lately. Sam and Dean could use this time apart, but then again, maybe Sam really needs someone to watch out for him. What with Lucifer itching to see him... I agree -- Sam played right into War's trap.

Really Bobby isn't in any shape to watching over Sam either. He's been left open to Lucifer. I'm getting this will lead to that white suit evil looking Sam we saw in the season five trailer.

Yes, I feel awful for him! I think I heard Anna might be coming back. I'm not completely certain though. I'm glad Castiel made it clear to Dean that what he did for Dean - led to painful costs for him and Cas is still reeling from it. I hope we see Anna again because that's a loose end that needs tying up. Maybe she can help Cas with his virginity problem:p I thought there was a hint that they where 'together' in the old days. Maybe it was just meant that they where close. I'm glad made it clear too. It needed to be said. I think since the moment Cas decided to help Dean he knew he was going to die and he thought it would be worth it. So I don't think Cas was ready for this. I'm glad the writers didn't skip over Cas's feelings on this issue.

I've never seen Rufus's first episode.:( It's kind a good that the boys have one mother-figure even if they only see her once and while. The boys had John and Bobby for a father-figure and I'm sure there was other hunters that where father-figure. I doubt John ever dated women in front of the boys so really no real mother's love for the boys:(

They realized that the Jo/Dean didn't work, so I'm glad they're not trying to force it anymore

I can forgive the mistake as long as they never repeat it. Dean/Anna work much better then one second of Dean/Jo ever did.

Yeah, the mental turmoil is going to be a lot harder to get past. Dean has always been by Sam's side -- it's about time Sam find someone (who's not Dean) who he could truly trust to help him with his problems. But like you said, there's no time to go that route...

Why do I think it's going to be Lucifer who there to pick up the pieces of Sam and shape him into a working human being. Only not the right kind. I get the feeling that from the dream Lucifer he's going to be very soft and understanding instead of outright bad guy.
