Supernatural 5.02: Good God, Y'All

Episode 5.02
“Good God, Y’All”

Castiel! Still delivering lines with a straight face, I see. I didn’t catch all of it, but I did start laughing when Dean mentioned something about [Edit with more correct lines...:P] “Try New Mexico, I hear God is on a tortilla” and then Cas, all serious as always is like, “God is not on any flat bread.” Like I said, I was cracking up as that golden exchange was occurring so beats me what the exact words were.

Oh, Cas…don’t ever change. :P

And oh! So cool that the Dean’s amulet (the one Sam gave to him that one Christmas years ago) is a sort of “God EMF” that burns out when God is near. Looks like the writers have finally given a concrete use for that amulet.

Also, I found it telling of the direction of Sam and Dean’s relationship, their previously close bond, is clearly shifting. With the amulet being the symbol of the bond Sam and Dean have with each other (since Sam gave it to Dean and Dean has worn it around his neck ever since); now that Dean handed over the amulet to Castiel; it’s definitely showing how Dean’s trust is shifting…that he’ll be looking to Castiel more.

I know Castiel had a good reason to ask for the amulet, that it had nothing to do with Dean giving up a “symbol” of his bond with Sam; but you know…it just felt like a significant moment for me.

And this is emphasized at the end of the episode where Sam tells Dean that they should go their separate ways. I think this is a good idea because I would like to see Dean to focus on honing his leadership skills without having to worry about Sam and the chance he might go back to the “dark side.” Though, I’m sure Lucifer will find his way to Sam…it’s only fitting. Okay, well, I know for sure this’ll happen because I’ve been reading all the spoilers shamelessly. But how can anyone not guess that that’s coming? Dean has an angel, and Sam will now have Lucifer, the freakin’ devil on his shoulder.

Poor Castiel – I knew he was going to be powered down and “cut off from Heaven” but it must be hard for him. He still has teleportation powers though, so that’s good. It was a nice touch when he had to call Sam and Dean via cellphone because of the sigil hiding the two from angels. So of course that includes Cas as well. That would have been a nasty plothole if the writers hadn’t covered their bases.

I’m glad they addressed what Castiel did for Dean – all that he gave up and the apocalypse still came despite it. I wasn’t surprised that Castiel would be frustrated and bitter over it…at least it’s not to the point where he’s turning his back on Dean completely. Then again, Cas really has no one else to turn to, and Dean is one of the main hopes to end the apocalypse. If Cas doesn’t find God, of course… Poor Cas! “…keep your opinions to yourself.” Dean better be nicer to him in the next episode! (looks like Dean and Cas will spend some quality time together in next week’s episode while Sam is visited by his dead girlfriend and the devil/Lucifer. What a bummer for Sam. : P).

Cool storyline – Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse…in this episode, it was War. Creative way to have people turn on each other – make people think the other person is a demon and needs to be killed when really they’re all just hallucinating.

It was nice to see Ellen, Jo and Rufus again…I liked Rufus the most, Ellen coming in second. Jo just leaves me a bitter taste in my mouth from how they forced Jo/Dean in season 2. She was all right in this episode though.

Sam needs a hug, I think. He’s messed up…hopefully some time away from Dean and hunting will help (you know when he’s not being visited by his dead girlfriend and Lucifer…ouch, best of luck there, Sammy. You just might need it…).
