“Merlin,” Gwen spoke softly.
She shut the door after she entered Merlin’s chambers. With a calming breath, she neared him.
“What is it, Gwen?” Merlin inquired, looking up at her.
He nodded to an empty chair by him.
Gwen sat down. She smiled, but it came out tight and painted on. Merlin knew that something was wrong.
“Merlin,” she started again. Her hands were clasped together in her lap. “It’s not me. It’s Arthur.”
Merlin raised his eyebrow. He looked carefully at Gwen. “Does he know?”
She shook her head. “You’ve been a good friend to me, to both of us--”
Merlin looked away. “Arthur doesn’t know you’re here.”
“No… you understand, this is a delicate matter.”
“You know my loyalties, Gwen.”
“I know. But this is important. This is for the benefit of Camelot…” Gwen reached out to him – placing her hand on top of his.
She had a pleading look in her eyes.
“This is betrayal,” Merlin choked out.
“Please, Merlin – you’re the only one I can trust with this.”
“You should tell him.”
“I don’t think Arthur would believe it.”
Merlin didn’t say anything in reply. The silence felt loud to her ears.
“This never happened,” Merlin finally said.
With a flick of his wrist, he locked the doors.
They would not be interrupted.

“Where is he?” Arthur demanded.
Gwen could feel Morgana’s gaze upon her. No matter the Queen’s well-concealed expression, she knew she was not able to fool her former mistress.
“It’s flattering, Arthur, that you seem to think I know Merlin’s every move,” Morgana said.
“Guinevere said she was looking for him, but he was nowhere to be found. Can’t you search for him with your magic?”
Morgana gave a long sigh. “If Merlin doesn’t want to be found, I won’t be able to find him.”
“What are you saying? What reason could Merlin possibly have to leave? And not wish to be found?”
She didn’t answer him.
Gwen tried to still her trembling as she grasped her goblet.
Arthur shook his head. “I want him back,” He said simply, to the point. “Do we understand each other, Morgana?” He looked her in the eye.
Gwen sipped her drink and then she set her goblet back down on to the table.
“You know how Arthur is about Merlin, Morgana. Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated,” Gwen said. She was grateful that her voice did not shake as much as she feared it would.
“Of course,” Morgana acquiesced, nodding politely. “Merlin is a friend to all of us. I’ll do what I can.”
But then she heard Morgana’s voice speaking in her mind. “Congratulations on being with child. What ever will you tell Arthur?”

I did write a sequel to this here (http://dk323.livejournal.com/74050.html) that resolves the situation. And also because I couldn't leave the story without Arthur finding out about the discretion.
