Doctor Who: The Waters of Mars

Hmmm... the Doctor didn't turn out to be very likable in this... I don't know. I understand his initial reluctance to not help and I agree with that, but it was more toward the end, when the Doctor started being all smug - "I thought I was a survivor, but really I'm the winner... Time Lord Victorious." A little too much confidence there.

I mean, YES, I understand that the Doctor was feeling awful and so conflicted about having to leave the crew members to their fate - because Capt. Adelaide Brooke's death was a fixed point in time... but there's a line that *has* to be drawn. The Doctor's cockiness at the very end there - being all "I can do anything (I'm the only Time Lord left after all)."

*sigh*

I'm not too surprised that Adelaide took the Doctor's information the way she did -- she understood the gravity of the situation and with that, she acted accordingly. It sucks a lot that she chose to kill herself, believe me, it was hard to have that happen -- but in this case, it needed to be done.

While yes, maybe her granddaughter Susan would still have been inspired to space exploration (the lightspeed ship...) if Adelaide had lived past November 21, 2059 -- but is it a really good idea to even take the chance? The Doctor shouldn't have been so ready to risk the future like that. It's a good thing, I suppose, that his time will end soon... I think Ten is getting tired with it all and he's not exactly thinking straight.

It was nice though -- despite all that -- that at least two of the crew members survived and now, this time around, people will know what happened to the rest of the crew on Mars - it won't be shrouded in mystery as it was originally without the Doctor's intervention.

Still a bit torn about Adelaide's decision to kill herself -- she did what she thought was right - taking to heart the Doctor's words about her being a fixed point in time. That's a really big deal - you can't mess with that. Like the Doctor couldn't stop what happened at Pompeii -- no matter if he managed to save one family - there were still many people who died during that event.

All in all, it is hard watching this sort of episode where the Doctor knows (along with the audience) the devastating fate that awaits the people...and the Doctor has to make the difficult decision *not* to interfere because this is a fixed point in time - *can not* be messed with.

Also, I feel the need to rewatch the S4 finale, but they were referencing the Dalek invasion of Earth that happened then (2008), I'm assuming. When Adelaide was 10 and first saw the Dalek who spared her life. I thought that was very interesting and cool... that the writers tied the S4 finale with this episode... that decades later, that girl grew up to be captain of the first crew to be off-world colonists on Mars. I vaguely recall a man running out of a house and getting killed by a Dalek in the S4 finale. Now seeing TWoM, I'm pretty sure it's the same man who was portrayed as Adelaide's father.

I always love it when things work together like that. So cool... Anyone get Reinette vibes from 10-year old Adelaide with her blonde hair? I adore "The Girl in the Fireplace", so I just caught the resemblance.

Loved the Gadget Gadget robot... one of the bright, amusing points about this episode. LOL at super-charged Gadget Gadget after the Doctor sonicked it up. And the robot came in super-handy with working the controls at the TARDIS and bringing the ship to save the remaining crew.

Awww...we need a robot companion, c'mon -- it would be fun, don't you think? Seriously! :P

Funny moment:

State your name, rank, and intention.

The Doctor, Doctor, Fun.

The Christmas Special! The Master is back! The end of the world, I expect. And goodbye to the Tenth Doctor. :(

I'm looking forward to Amy Pond though, Eleven's first companion. No comment on Eleven -- still waiting for how he plays the role. I'm not too sure about him yet...

The Doctor went a bit sadistic towards the end, which I suppose is understandable. Your funny moment was the same as mine! xD

Can't wait for the Christmas special though, except parting from David, obviously!

Yeah, maybe he just has been without a companion for a little too long. He's a bit out of sorts because of it.

It was an easy choice, really. That answer was just so Ten -- I'll definitely miss him (no matter his "Time Lord Victorious" behavior toward the end there).

I look forward to the Christmas special - I'll definitely miss David Tennant as the Doctor, I agree. He was my first Doctor, so it will be hard to part from him. Though I liked Christopher Eccleston (upon backtracking to see S1) as Nine, so I think I'll grow to like Eleven. *is optimistic*

Still, Ten will be missed. :(

Mine too, and like you said, I quite like CE when I went back and watched some series one. I'm ready to give the new guy a chance anyway :D
