Merlin fic: Even as a teddy bear, Arthur was a prat

Title: Even as a teddy bear, Arthur was a prat
Author: dk323
Rating: PG
Characters/Pairings: Merlin/Arthur, Morgana, Gwen
Spoilers: None – Modern! AU
Disclaimer: The show Merlin is property of the BBC. No money being made.
Summary: [Modern! AU] The one where Merlin and Arthur are turned into teddy bears. Arthur gets jealous and Merlin is the sweetest teddy bear ever – at least Morgana and Gwen think so.
Author’s Note: After reading [livejournal.com profile] nyxelestia’s “Snuggle” fic, I got the idea to write a fic where Merlin and Arthur are both teddy bears. The cuteness factor made the idea irresistible. So here it is. : )

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] leochi who drew teddy bear!Arthur and Merlin in all their glory.

“Hello, Gwen. It’s good to see you,” Morgana said graciously.

She opened the door to let her friend in.

Gwen smiled at her. “How are you, Morgana? I trust everything is well.”

“Well, there was a bit of a mishap…” Morgana told her.

Just then, Gwen felt something soft against her leg. She looked down and let out a small, “Oh!”

Gwen found a bright blue teddy bear with a ‘Kiss Me’ imprint on its furry chest looking up at her. The teddy bear had the most earnest blue eyes she had ever seen.

Morgana let out a giggle. “Merlin accidentally turned himself and Arthur into teddy bears.”

Gwen gasped. “Permanently?”

Morgana was quick to reassure her. “Oh, I don’t think so. From what I read, I’m certain the spell will last only a few hours. It should be fine, I hope. But it’s a good thing I was here. One look at Merlin and I’m sure anyone would have loved to take him home.”

Gwen stared in disbelief. Of all the things to turn into…

“So the blue bear is Merlin?” Gwen wanted to confirm.

Morgana nodded.

When she saw teddy bear! Merlin raise his short, furry arms at her; Gwen knew she couldn’t resist picking him up.

“Hi!” Merlin said cheerfully to Gwen. He pressed himself against her, trying to snuggle with her.

“Oh yes, I should have said – they can talk as well,” Morgana explained before Gwen dropped teddy bear!Merlin in shock.

“Oh, aren’t you so sweet?” Gwen murmured as Merlin conjured a yellow rose for her.

Merlin made a brave attempt to climb on to her shoulder and he inserted the flower into her hair, which Gwen had already tied back with a pin.

“Thank you, Merlin.”

“You look pretty,” he said in reply as he smiled back at her.

She took him back in her arms and kissed him on the forehead. The ‘Kiss Me’ imprint on him glowed golden for a moment before fading away.

Merlin clapped his hands enthusiastically.

Morgana shook her head, amused at the sight. She sighed then as she eyed the couch. “It’s a shame Arthur isn’t taking this so well.”

Gwen looked at her questioningly. “Where is Arthur?”

She nodded toward the couch. “He’s busy sulking on the couch. I tried to pick him up, but he just frowned and waved his sword at me. It took ages for Arthur to get up on that couch. He was so determined to get up there.”

Gwen pressed her hand to her mouth – adjusting Merlin so that he sat cradled in the crook of her other arm. “I can just imagine the sight.”

Morgana gave her a conspiratorial look. “It was definitely a sight to see,” she then leaned toward Gwen and whispered in her ear, “Don’t tell Arthur this, but Merlin helped him climb up to sit on the couch. Merlin offered to help at first, but Arthur refused – the stubborn person he is. Merlin still helped him anyway, discreetly of course.”

“Oh Merlin. You’ve always been helpful. Such a sweetheart,” Gwen said to him.

“Arthur was being a prat,” Merlin informed her.

“He accidentally whacked his sword – mind you, it’s a blunt toy sword – over Merlin’s head. Called him an ‘idiot’.”

Gwen nodded. “Some things never change, do they?”

“I can hear you!” They heard a shout that was clearly Arthur’s come from the couch.

And then Gwen saw a fluffy, white teddy bear peek out above the arm of the couch.

Teddy bear! Arthur did not look happy.

Morgana shook her head at Gwen. “Watch out for the sword. He’s a little too attached to it.”

Gwen nodded and the two of them went to the couch. Gwen sat down beside the frowning teddy bear! Arthur while Morgana sat next to her. Merlin stayed in Gwen’s lap – conjuring a few twinkling gold stars in front of him and making them dance.

“Stop being such a girl, Merlin, and get off of Gwen’s lap,” Arthur said sharply, annoyed.

“No, I don’t want to,” Merlin sniffed, refusing to look at Arthur. “Not until you stop hitting me with that sword.”

Despite Merlin’s protest, Arthur took his sword and poked him with it.

“Arthur!” Merlin said, giving him a pointed look. He moved away from him, though he still stayed on Gwen’s lap, cuddling even closer to her chest.

Arthur tried to get Merlin with his sword again, but Gwen’s hand blocked his movement.

“Now Arthur, that’s enough. You should be nice to Merlin,” Gwen admonished him.

Morgana shook her head. “I’ve tried that, Gwen. Arthur won’t listen.”

As expected, Arthur huffed at Gwen.

Then he turned back to Merlin and he said, “Why must you be so friendly? I don’t like it.”

“Just admit you’re jealous, Arthur!” Merlin cried.

Arthur looked affronted, crossing his arms over his chest. The effect was lost on Morgana and Gwen who just thought it made teddy bear! Arthur look even cuter. “I am not jealous!” He shot back.

Merlin looked like he was about to give a retort, but then instead, he went off of Gwen’s lap and jumped off of the couch.

“Get back here, Merlin!” Arthur demanded.

“No!” Merlin said as he ran across the hardwood floor as fast as his short, furry legs allowed him.

Arthur leapt off of the couch, toy sword still in hand, and went off after him.

“Oh my! I thought I’ve seen everything, but this…!” Gwen remarked, laughing at the sight of Arthur chasing after Merlin.

Morgana nodded. She joined in, laughing with Gwen as they watched Arthur and Merlin’s teddy bear antics.

Unfortunately, Arthur was losing royally what with Merlin disappearing, an array of sparkles left in his wake, every time Arthur was about to grab him.

“Using your magic is cheating, you bloody wizard!” Arthur said, glaring into the space where Merlin had just disappeared from.

Then Merlin reappeared and only grinned at Arthur.

“I won’t stop until you stop being a prat!” Merlin sing-songed.

“You can’t tell me what to do!” Arthur shot back.

He waved his sword about in an attempt to look threatening.

But it really just made him look adorable.

Merlin gave him a mischievous look and a moment later, Arthur found his sword gone.

Instead, his sword had been magicked into a stone that appeared before him.

“You asked for it,” Merlin chided him smugly.

Arthur glared at him and then he proceeded to pull the sword out of the stone.

The sword wouldn’t budge – like it was stuck in the stone.

“I guess you’re not worthy!” Merlin announced, grinning at him. Still, he jumped up and down; appearing enthusiastic at Arthur’s determined efforts to extract his sword.

“Shut up, Merlin,” Arthur retorted, half-heartedly though as he was still concentrating on getting out the sword.

After a few minutes, the sword slid out of its encasement. Arthur smiled widely, waving his sword in triumph.

“Go, Arthur!” Morgana and Gwen congratulated him in unison amidst their laughter.

The girls were enjoying this far too much.

“My hero,” Merlin said and then he kissed Arthur on the cheek.

Arthur blushed, the redness showing clearly on his white fur.

Merlin conjured a dark red rose for him and handed it to him. Arthur took it, but then he looked at Merlin with an unreadable look in his eyes.

Arthur moved toward Merlin suddenly. Merlin was so surprised that he fell on his back to rest on the floor. And then Arthur was on top of him and he pressed his mouth to Merlin’s.

Merlin’s ‘Kiss Me’ imprint glowed a very bright gold color – even more intensely than when Gwen had kissed him on the forehead.

“I feel like I’m in the Twilight Zone. Never thought I’d be telling teddy bears to get a room already,” Morgana confided in Gwen.

Gwen could barely breathe, she was laughing so hard.

Morgana called to the two teddy bears. “Hey, Merlin, Arthur – if you’re going to go above a G-rating, you two should get a room!”

Not a moment later, the two of them disappeared leaving a lot of brightly-colored sparkles in their wake.

This scene is not fit for general audiences. Let’s just say, there was a lot of teddy bear loving going on…

Later:

“C’mon, Merlin. I want a horse, too!”

“This isn’t a horse. It’s a unicorn. Don’t you see the horn?”

Arthur huffed, his furry hands on his hips. “I can see that, Merlin! You know what I meant.”

“I could give you a donkey…” Merlin mused, delighting in the affronted look on Arthur’s face.

“Merlin! Don’t you dare,” He warned him.

In the end, Merlin relented and he conjured him a majestic, black stallion. Both the unicorn and stallion were the perfect sizes for the two of them in their teddy bear states.

“I call him, ‘Black Beauty’,” Merlin said, smiling from his place atop his unicorn.

Arthur just looked at him. “I don’t even want to know,” He muttered. Arthur was certain that Merlin was simply trying to dissuade him from riding on the horse.

Because really, what sort of name was, “Black Beauty”?

They rode around Arthur’s room and after a while, they went out into the hallway.

Arthur decided that being a teddy bear wasn’t all bad.

Well, if you had a magical teddy bear on your side.

Then, it was actually sort of nice.
