Merlin: S2|E10: "Sweet Dreams"
Arthur/Gwen
Arthur/Gwen = THE EPIC COUPLE OF TRUE LOVE. Remember us? Yes? No, really...do you? Let us remind you by us interacting and all that before ARTHUR GETS ENCHANTED AGAIN BY SOPHIA 2.0.
I like Arthur/Gwen - key word: like. I think they're a sweet pairing and all, but I just don't think the show's doing a very good job of showing why they love each other. It's just... I still can't get over how sudden it came about in only the 2nd episode of S2. And honestly, Arthur's lines about "not caring for anyone more than he cares for her" = more tell and less show.
I kind of feel bad for Merlin in this after all the moments in S1 where Arthur definitely showed that he cared for Merlin. SHOW - it's the way to go. Thank you.
Honestly, I'd believe Arthur and Morgana having a little thing in S2 considering their relationship development in S1. It's just the way Gwen all of a sudden (it seems) came to the forefront in S2 while Morgana is pushed back (and not just that, but quite a few lost opportunities for interaction with Merlin -- that loss just makes it even worse :().
All that said, I'm open-minded about the pairings in this show...though more and more, I'm cheering just a little bit more for Gwen/Lancelot.
I did feel sorry for Gwen when there was that misunderstanding...and she waited at the table for Arthur to come...and he never came (silly!enchanted!Arthur - totally thinking with your downstairs brain there, weren't you, Arthur? *cough*). It was heartbreaking to see her sad face when she knew he wasn't coming. You know, Merlin really should have told her right after he found out Arthur was enchanted about what really was going on... BUT, of course for the sake of the plot, Gwen had to have that scene so we could see how hard this was for her. :(
At least, she's a realist - though it must have hurt to say that bit at the end - reminding Arthur that she can't be his Queen. Arthur, of course, trying to be idealistic and suggesting that things could change.
Or, maybe, Gwen was letting him down easy. Who knows, maybe she's trying to track down Lancelot with Morgana (who has barely been in the last few episodes - so not too farfetched to suggest she was assisting in Lancelot-tracking).
You never know...
OH, FINAL NOTE: The kiss between Arthur and Gwen to break the enchantment. That was rather awesome, I think. Very Hollywoodesque with the intensity of it and the dip and all that. Yes. But this is not a Hollywood movie nor a Disney movie... um, still, I liked it. Definitely a step up from their sunlit kiss in 2x02.
Merlin/Arthur
Loved to see their moments, as always. Not as epic and awesome as last week with the cheering up scene, but still fun to watch.
Of course, Arthur would enlist Merlin's help in wooing Lady Vivian - loved that whole scene where Arthur was asking for advice on "proper" wooing. Ha, after all, Merlin should know! What with those flowers he picked for Morgana in 2x03. :p
And then the whole scene where Arthur is heartbroken at Lady Vivian's rejection and Merlin's thinking, "Um, okaaaay, what the hell is going on? Must make Arthur see reason like NOW."
Arthur: "Merlin, look here - there's this piece of blonde hair underneath my pillow. The hell? Worst. manservant. ever."
Later: Merlin & Gaius
Merlin: "Enchantment?"
Gaius raises his eyebrow.
Merlin: "Right. Just my luck. Well, add that to my workload: stop Arthur from making a complete idiot out of himself."
~ * ~
LOL at Merlin trying to steer Arthur away from Lady Vivian... You can't deny the "destiny...and chicken" line was hilarious though. LOL.
Plus, Merlin hiding Lady Vivian so that King Olaf wouldn't find her in Arthur's rooms. OMG, I can not believe he hid her in the cupboard. Way to save Arthur's enchanted arse. LOL. AND, Merlin's line about how that cupboard hasn't been able to be opened in years -- um...nice save there, Merlin. ;)
Anyone notice how throughout this episode, Merlin was rather SUPREMELY careless about using his magic. Definite trend developing here... guess he used the excuse that well, Arthur and Vivian were in an enchanted haze and all that so SURELY THEY WILL NOT NOTICE ANY MAGIC BEING DONE.
Yes, Merlin, continue to throw caution to the wind... please do. All this is showing is that everyone in Camelot appears to be rather blind to whatever Merlin is doing (and c'mon, he's not exactly that stealthy, people! Seriously...)
Lady Vivian
I do feel a bit sorry for her... Okay she was a spoiled brat and all that, but she was still left under the enchantment. Hopefully she found *her* true love to break the enchantment. It's not fair to her...
But yes, I know - we're not supposed to feel sympathy toward her, but she's still a person - a very sheltered, naive person at that. I just kept thinking of how in the Victorian Era (19th century) - high society women did not have much to do other than gossip, attend parties and all that. Everything seemed so frivolous...and that's why some of them fell into hysteria because there really was nothing to do except look pretty and all that. I haven't read up on this period of history recently and I know we're talking about completely different eras here - medieval times versus the Victorian Era, but the thing with Lady Vivian made me think of women in the Victorian Era... sort of a random connection, I suppose, but there it is.
The Dragon
"I did it for the LOLs."
Loved his scene with Merlin where the Dragon couldn't resist laughing over the whole enchanted!Arthur thing. Be nice to the Dragon, Merlin - he needs some amusement in his currently lonely, dismal life. :P
Next Episode
MORGANA! *cheers* Finally, another episode this season where Morgana has a significant role to play. And Mordred is back! Evil is afoot, as is par for the course.
But really the fact Morgana is *actually* in the next episode is enough for me. Can't wait to see how Merlin gets involved in the plot...

I know - he had awesome comedic timing in this episode. It was so much fun to watch him under the enchantment - he was just so over the top throughout most of it. Like jumping on to the bed and the wooing! How can I forget the wooing?? :p "Today my job is to woo," Oh, Arthur. LOL

I agree! The Dragon couldn't resist finding amusement in this turn of events. Who wouldn't? :p

Oh, Gwen. :( What broke my heart this episode was that she is, as you said, a very realistic person. She's been through a lot of hurt, lost her only family, and has every reason to have a much darker outlook on life than she does. And here she was letting herself, just this once, get caught up in romance and flowers and girlhood whimsy... only to have her hopes dashed, her lowly place in the world enforced. Oh, Gwen. You are so much better than your lot in life, and one day you'll show the world. That said, the Arthur/Gwen kiss made me swoon. Argh, they keep screwing up my slash, whenever they have scenes together I keep smiling dopily and thinking of what an awesome kingdom Camelot will be with Arthur and Gwen as King and Queen. I mean, I know they're rushing it--when Merlin was talking about True Love's kiss breaking the enchantment I was all for Merlin trying his hand, makes more sense from what the canon has supplied us--but. Well, I know she'll break his heart someday, but until then I am so looking forward to the new age they will achieve together.
(Ahaha I wrote all that about Arthur/Gwen, lol.)
On Arthur/Merlin:
Arthur: So! I need your help in...expressing...my feelings.
Merlin: Of course.
Arthur: .........!
Merlin:..............?
Arthur: How do I express my feelings?!
XD OMG during Merlin's pause in the middle he does this little silent mouthed "What?" that SLAYS ME, I don't know how many times I rewound. Ahhh, their comedic timing is so SPOT-ON. I love them so.
OH GOD ALSO
King Olaf: Dammit! Every woman in the land is attracted to this boy…[thoughtfully]…I’m almost attracted to him myself.
..................?????????!! Why hello random drive-by squicky slash, and an LOL to you! (Although, does conform to the tru fax of 'Who wouldn't do Arthur?")
Yeah, I felt bad for Lady Vivian, too! I mean, she only has to find her One True Love in order to be freed!...except then I remembered that this is the age of fairy tales so this totally happens all the time, and I was able to move on.
"I did it for the LOLs."
I think the Dragon has really started looking forward to Merlin visiting him, mostly because he's Chained-In-A-Dungeon Lonely, but especially because these last few visits Merlin has brought him Epic Lulz.
Argh Morgana where have you been?? I think you are right and she is totally tracking down Lancelot, because constantly Staring Out Windows Moodily has already been taken in earnest by Arthur, and Morgana is too clever to be using it as anything less than a front. Yay for next week!
