Merlin: S2|E13: "The Last Dragonlord"
The happiest part of this episode for me was that the Great Dragon (or the Slash Dragon as he's come to be called :-)) lived. *cheers* I'm glad that Merlin was able to tame the dragon and then ultimately decided to grant the dragon clemency. I admit I would have been sad if Merlin had killed the Dragon -- I know, I know that the Dragon had unleashed mayhem on Camelot and everything, but he wanted Uther to pay for locking him up for all those years. You can't help but feel sorry for the Dragon. And now - Merlin will have the Dragon as a future ally when he needs one due to the mercy that he granted the Dragon. So, win/win.
AND I'D LIKE TO THINK THAT THE DRAGON WASN'T INTENDING TO KILL ARTHUR (THE DRAGON STILL STANDS BY HIS SHIP {ARTHUR/MERLIN}, YES HE DOES). HE WAS ONLY KNOCKING ARTHUR DOWN IN A GESTURE OF SELF-DEFENSE WITH NO INTENT TO KILL. THAT'S HOW I SEE IT, AND THAT'S HOW IT'LL BE. :P
And I was right! *cheers* The last dragonlord was Merlin's father! :) I knew that mention from Merlin in 2x08 about having the "vaguest memory of his father" would come back to be explored further. I'm so glad that it ended up being in the S2 finale (it would have sucked to wait longer -- like the loooong wait we're in for until Arthur finally gets a clue and finds out about Merlin's magic).
********** Okay, I'm wondering now... Merlin had a vague memory of his father, but it's clear from this episode that his father didn't even know that he had a son. So I guess that Hunith might have had Merlin, when he was very young, see his father briefly? I just wonder how that worked exactly... if Merlin remembered him, but his father had no clue that he had had a son with Hunith. Plot hole? Well...I guess it could easily be explained away...still, something doesn't fit.
I loved how happy Merlin was to meet his father...I couldn't help but "awww"... oh, Merlin. FAIL, SHOW, FAIL for killing his father, but it looks like it really had to be done... so that the dragonlord talent could be passed down to Merlin (because this show is about Merlin, so he should be the one to save Camelot -- no matter how devastating it was that his father had to die to have this occur).
I do wonder if his father knew about how the talent was passed down -- that he would have to die so that Merlin would possess the ability to tame dragons. If Ballinor knew, I imagine he wouldn't have been gung-ho about telling Merlin -- the last thing that Merlin would have wanted to find out so soon after finding his father. Oh goodness, the scene where Merlin tells him that he is his son... Merlin's face -- so much emotion...I just...it was such a lovely scene. It was nice to see Merlin just so overcome with happiness over the reunion.
I did find it rather funny (seriously, watch it a few times and you'll see) at how Arthur just sort of walked by them during Merlin's reveal to his father... I almost wanted Arthur to wear some silly mask as he was walking by (like "Hey, don't mind me. Just being oblivious because the plot demands it as usual.")... this whole keeping secrets from Arthur is just getting ridiculous.
I liked how Merlin's father healed Arthur... and apparently Arthur was healed a little too well. Did he seem a little high to anyone? I DON'T KNOW, BUT I'M ALMOST POSITIVE ARTHUR WAS SMOKING SOMETHING DURING THIS EPISODE (OR A GOOD PART OF IT). He was just a little too happy and chummy with Merlin (not that I mind, but whoa, Arthur, that much sugar is not good for you! :P).
And, the sequel to "The Poisoned Chalice" moment was made of win. Remember how Merlin was moaning Arthur's name in that S1 episode while Arthur was on a quest to retrieve the flower? Well, now we have Arthur moaning Merlin's name in his sleep. *grins* Everything has come full circle. :-) Okay, so yes, the moment interrupted Merlin telling the dragonlord that he was his father, but still...I so grinned when Arthur was calling for Merlin. They are soo best friends forever. Arthur/Gwen, what?
I do think Gwen looked pretty in this episode and all. The obligatory Arthur/Gwen scenes were nice...love the little hug at the end.
Did anyone else think EPIC when, at the end, Merlin and Arthur were walking back inside the castle courtyard after "defeating" the Dragon? The way the scene was shot it very much looked like that was what they were trying to show. Either way, it was a beautiful shot -- Merlin/Arthur to the end. :-)
Well, this was a nice way to end the season...even though the loss of Morgana is still clearly felt. I expect some sh*t to go down bigtime when she returns and confronts Merlin properly about what he did to her. Hopefully the writers don't mess up the scene.. there will be major tension, I'm sure.
ONE REQUEST FOR SEASON THREE:
If they reset Merlin & Arthur's friendship AGAIN to what it was at the start of S1 (disregarding the development of their friendship in S1 and S2) then I will NOT BE HAPPY. I will not take "re-establishing their relationship" or informing new viewers what their relationship was like at the start and then progressing it to how it should have been at the start of S2 anyway (the S1 finale and the S2 premiere with the Cedric debacle did not fit together at all in terms of characterization) as an excuse.
DO NOT PUNISH OLD VIEWERS BY SETTING BACK THE PROGRESS OF THEIR RELATIONSHIP FOR THE SAKE OF NEW VIEWERS. Your reasoning sucks, show. Continue the progression into S3 please...if I watch a big Arthur/Merlin RESET once again, I will not be happy at all.

Exactly! I doubt the writers will make the same mistake twice. Like you said, in S2, Arthur & Merlin's friendship has gotten even stronger. It would be terribly wrong if that friendship reverts back to how it was in early S1.

I loved this episode!

I know, right? I was like, "Whoa, Arthur. Lower your sugar intake or something."
Whatever Balinor was using, can I have some?
LOL. I'm with you on that. ;)
I loved this episode!
Me too - I like how there were more Arthur/Merlin moments compared to S1's finale. I enjoyed all their scenes together. And it was also nice to get some development on Merlin's family background. :)

LOL about how you see the Dragon's actions in regrauds to Arthur.
I love that the last dragonlord was Merlin's father. I'm sad he had to be killed off so suddenly. The whole vague memory thing is mistake since his father didn't know about him. Unless those vague memories are about a different man who we may see later?
Merlin is just so endearing when he was so happy to to meet his father and then later when his father knew the truth. I wish they had more time together.:(
Arthur was a luagh when he walked by the big releval.
LOL about Arthur being healed a little too well. That's so true! He was acting high:D He was so funny.
Good catch on the the sequel to "The Poisoned Chalice" moment was made of win.
Gwen/Arthur scenes where nice little touchs. Sweet but not over doing it.
I thought it was epic when they came back walking together after defeating the dragon.
I second your request for season three. The friendship has grown far to strong to go backwards.

Yes, I almost feel like it's wrong to like the Dragon after the destruction he caused in Camelot, but he was done a grave wrong after all. It's not fun for anyone to be locked up in a dark, dismal prison for years. I'm not surprised that the Dragon retaliated.
I'm very grateful that, in the end, Merlin let him go free and the Dragon showed his appreciation for the gesture. I was so happy that the two of them stayed on good terms there. I was worried that Merlin would kill the Dragon, so knowing that he has gained an ally when he needs one was more than I had expected. (I totally feared for the worst - thankfully that didn't come to light).
I think that moment between the Dragon and Merlin was the best part of the episode for me. Sure, there were quite a few great scenes (between Merlin and Arthur, and of course, between Merlin and his father); but I was just so ridiculously relieved at how things ended with the Dragon. It was such a nice scene too. :)
LOL about how you see the Dragon's actions in regrauds to Arthur.
Because it's fact. LOL. It has to be. *nods* :p
Unless those vague memories are about a different man who we may see later?
*head spins* Who knows, maybe it could be that. Though I fear it may just be a continuity error that the writers have already forgotten about. Fail. :(
I loved all the moments between Merlin and his father. They were so nicely done and like you said, Merlin was so endearing when he interacted with his father. You could almost feel his happiness at finally meeting him.
If only Balinor hadn't died so soon! :( I agree - they should have had more time together. I really do hope Merlin goes to see his mother (or she visit him) in S3 just so they could talk about Balinor and Merlin could tell his mother what happened. *is hopeful*
LOL about Arthur being healed a little too well. That's so true! He was acting high:D He was so funny.
I can't help but laugh every time I watch that scene. Love how he interrupts Merlin's sad mood with his sudden cheeriness. Arthur definitely knows how to steal a scene. As evidenced by his random walking by during the reveal scene. It's like, "What're you doing there, Arthur?" Don't tell me that he wasn't eavesdropping just a bit.
Good catch on the the sequel to "The Poisoned Chalice" moment was made of win.
Because the finale would not have been complete without it. ;) And I love "The Poisoned Chalice" episode a lot, so I couldn't resist seeing that moment as a shoutout to that episode. *grins*
Gwen/Arthur scenes where nice little touchs. Sweet but not over doing it.
Yes, I think they were nice. Though really, my favorite Arthur/Gwen scene ever is from the S1 finale after Arthur wakes up in bed...and he teases Gwen about what she said to him while he was asleep. I love the flirting/teasing vibe of the whole scene. And it didn't feel so sudden or forced like a number of Arthur/Gwen scenes in S2.
But in the S2 finale, the Arthur/Gwen moments were all right.
I thought it was epic when they came back walking together after defeating the dragon.
Yes, that was a beautiful moment. It was a great final Merlin & Arthur scene for S2. It made me think, "Legendary." :)
I second your request for season three. The friendship has grown far to strong to go backwards.
I will be very upset if they do reset it. Especially considering how much further their friendship has grown this season in particular. :)
