S4.11: Turn Left! (Or else...)
Donna definitely stole the show. I knew she would go through a lot in this episode...and I felt soo bad for what she went through. I don't think I realized how much things would be different if the Doctor died in the Racnoss incident...and hadn't met Donna. Whoa, it hit me while watching the episode.
Royal Hope Hospital...every single occupant dead except Morgenstern, the Titanic space ship (and I didn't think much of VotD, thought it was a light episode, but of course a huge space ship hitting London would cause devastating aftereffects...*shudder*), the Adipose, the ATMOS devices & Sontarans, and then all the stars going out. I did like the former companion mentions...(ever so subtle hint for the companion circus in the finale there. Hee.). I haven't watched Torchwood (I plan to though, hopefully soon), but I have watched quite a few eps of Sarah Jane Adventures. So at least I'm familiar with those characters...so glad to see Luke in the trailer for next week! Of course he'd be there since he's Sarah Jane's son. :-) So sad that Sarah Jane, Maria, and
I have to mention the fact that even though Martha Jones had died at Royal Hope ( :-( ), I loved that she was still awesome even if the Doctor wasn't there - by giving the last oxygen tank to Morgenstern. Proved she didn't really need the Doctor to show her she was awesome...she was already that - the Doctor just gave her opportunities to let it really shine through. :-) All right, moving on...lol.
Wilf was awesome as always...no matter the situation, he somehow managed to pull through and keep his spirits up. The scene where the Italian family was taken away to labor camps...and he said, "It's happening again. Just like before," and the growing horror as Donna began to realize what was truly going on. Doctor Who definitely carried a darker tone in this episode...showing what would happen if the world turned a dark leaf because everything was collapsing - people dying, no jobs available, people crowding together.
Rose has returned, but she didn't seem like herself...maybe it's 'cause we haven't seen her since the Series 2 finale (PiC doesn't really count), but she even sounded different. I wasn't sure what it was exactly - read in another reaction post that she sounded like she had a lisp. Maybe that was it. Kinda was different (not sure if it's good or bad) that suddenly she has all this knowledge and seems to emulate the Doctor with the technobabble and seems to know everything. Even though she found a way (through Torchwood, most likely) to cross different universes and jump around in Donna's timeline (since Rose knew Donna was going to die & that the Doctor said that Donna was brilliant), she still wasn't sure whether Donna would be able to go back and fix things (by turning left).
Honestly, I'm glad she's back and all, but there were a few moments that grated. Like when Donna was feeling miserable and scared of the big beetle on her back...she was so asking for a hug...and yet Rose didn't hug her. Yeah, I know it's a bit silly and minor, but a hug always helps. And the sad look on Rose's face when Donna believes that she was meant to die in the wrong reality, but Rose's face tells her that she meant the reality with the Doctor in it. Poor Donna. :-( I suppose we could fanwank and say it's all due to alt!Torchwood that Rose has gained all this knowledge, but I hope we find out how long it's been for her in the other universe. It looks like it's been a while considering what she knows.
I loved the last part when Donna fixes things and finds herself back at the fortune teller's....and the Doctor comes back. Love the hug she gives him...sweet reverse of Midnight. :-) But then holy crap when Donna tells the Doctor about the blonde woman...and the Doctor suddenly gets very interested...(of course!). I knew the two words Rose had told her were 'Bad Wolf'. How can it be anything else? And at the mention of that, Bad Wolf starts appearing all around them...even on the TARDIS, which is very creepy. Loved the music in the background - definitely echoed the Series 3 finale (loved that track ;)). And the TARDIS had a red glow - bad flashback to the paradox machine! Not good. Like the Doctor said, "End of the universe." Would it be anything else?
Not too thrilled about the return of the Daleks. The Master was a far more interesting villain. But a ton of companions to fit into the Series 4 finale two-parter. Hope it's an exciting ride at least - with not too many plotholes (but who am I kidding considering this episode didn't consider the fact that the world would have ended in 1599 with the Carrionites if the Doctor hadn't been there and then with Pompeii if the Doctor hadn't been there to push the lever...there are probably a few others I'm missing as well. Anyway, sometimes plotholes are unavoidable...as long as the acting is good, I could overlook it. ;-))
All in all, it was a good episode.
